• October 16, 2014This reminds me of an interview question that's popular for computer science related jobs for some reason: How many piano tuners (people, not devices) are in New York City? I honestly don't think this question really has any value but I've been asked this on job interviews twice over the years.
Well anyway, the tactic I take in the interview is to come up with some estimates... I'd first ask estimate how many households in the world would be wealthy enough to have one and add in universities and concert halls. Really rough numbers without looking up anything:

7 billion people so maybe 3 billion households?

Half the world lives in a huge amount of poverty. 1.5 billion

Of the people who don't live in poverty, probably 5% can even afford a piano
-
10% of those that could afford them actually have them
That comes out to ~7.5million. These numbers are literally just made up on the spot. I bet the amount in universities and concert halls adds in another 1-5 million? That's probably high because I have no idea what the distribution of pianos would be in countries like India and China which have most of the earth's population.
Anyway, that's my terrible estimation. They usually like my reasoning, but I bet I'm nowhere near the right number.
