How Google built Pixel’s AI Add Me feature
January 7, 2026 - The Pixel Add Me feature lets you combine two photos taken in the same scene, so everyone, including the photographer, is in the picture. The feature was inspired by the common problem of photographers being left out of group photos.

It wasn't the only merging two photo apps in similar ways, at the time or since. It was a slightly better one at the time. Add me is quite a lot more advanced, but of course just does the same thing at it's core. Not sure what the point is. More on reddit.com

Yea tbh, I used to Photoshop a family member in. I guess looking back those weren't "real" photos either, but they're real memories. More on reddit.com

It wasn't the only merging two photo apps in similar ways, at the time or since. It was a slightly better one at the time. Add me is quite a lot more advanced, but of course just does the same thing at it's core. Not sure what the point is.

This is so silly. There were also phones that made calls and took pictures before the Pixel. There are also apps that did call screening and generated pictures before the Pixel.

I was on vacation with my family and we wanted to take a family photo. We were at a cabin, just the family, so there was no stranger to hold the phone for us. Not wanting to try and include 5+ people in a selfie, I decided to give Add Me ago. And... It actually worked pretty well on the first try. We got the photo! There is one small spot where, if you pixel peep, you can tell that there is some trickery going on, but at face value the photo is convincing.
Is it a "real" photo? No, and that bothers me a bit. But it was our last chance to get a photo together to remember our time together. And technically everyone WAS present in real life as in the photo, just at slightly different moments in time. The fact that I could do that so easily is so rad. With any other phone I we simply would have left the vacation without a good photo together.
Has anyone else used the feature to capture a special moment like this?
