John 3:16 is cited so often because it is the most succinct way of putting the Gospel. John 3:16 (KJV) For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. The longer version is that you are a sinner who has trangressed against God and deserve death because of it. Romans 3:10-12 (KJV) As it is written, There is none righteous, no, not one: There is none that understandeth, there is none that seeketh after God. They are all gone out of the way, they are together become unprofitable; there is none that doeth good, no, not one. Romans 6:23 (KJV) For the wages of sin is death; but the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord. 1 John 1:8, 10 (KJV) If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. [...] If we say that we have not sinned, we make him a liar, and his word is not in us. As a mere human, you are incapable of atoning for your sin through personal effort or through the efforts of another mere human. It’s been easily a decade since I read it, but there’s a passage, really a…list? near the end that is just etched permanently into my brain. I’d be interested to revisit it, but it certainly made an impact.
