Pranayama is more advanced practice than asana and Kumbhaka (Retention) is the next step. There is a good discussion group at r/pranayama . A few important references: The Yoga Sutras of Patanjali are the foundation of Yogic philosophy. My Teacher David Garrigues recommends the translation by Barbara Stoler Miller and the translation by Vyaas Houston. The Hatha Yoga Pradipika is the practice manual for Hatha Yoga. It explains the purpose of the various asana, mudra and pranayama and their role on the path to Enlightenment. My Teacher recommends the translation by Pancham Singh . More on reddit.com

Lie in savasana and breathe deeply, paying attention to the belly, the throat, the contact of the body against the floor. You can set up bolsters & cushions to make the posture more comfortable, so that you can breathe easily. Set a strong intention to practice well! Working with Asana (Postures) prepares them physically and mentally for the practice. The advanced Pranayama techniques of Kumbhaka and Bhastrika/Kapalbhati induce altered states of awareness and conjure deep seated fears of death/dying.
