Do you think liberals and conservatives are attracted to different sports?
Are there any NFL teams associated with certain political parties/movements?
If the NFL is supposedly right leaning, why does it consistently pick halftime performers who are left leaning and likely to make a political statement in front of a global audience?
Why do NFL players seem more conservative then NBA players?
Imo yes. Could be bias/the idea that I'm more likely to meet conservatives who will openly voice their opinion vs liberals or the guys who do my sport are a bit older in general and thus more cons.
But I've noticed from my personal life that things like combat sports are very conservative, and everyone there is a bit of a conspiracy theorist. Always talking how people want to take our freedoms away, lockdown/covid being a lie, etc.
In Soccer, especially in Europe, a lot of teams have certain political identities attached to them, for example Celtics FC and Rangers FC have a football rivalry and mostly Catholic and Protestant fanbases, SS Lazio is known to have right wing ultras in their fanbase, St Pauli has been associated with left wing supporters.
Is there something like this in the NFL?
It seems like NFL players, overall, lean more conservative or are at least much more comfortable being publicly associated with conservative politics compared to athletes in other leagues. This has stood out to me more and more over time.
On the white player side, you have very visible examples like Nick Bosa and Harrison Butker, who have openly expressed conservative views or traditional values. That kind of politics rarely causes serious backlash in the NFL and often feels normalized or expected within the league.
What stands out even more is that this pattern is not limited to white players. Several high-profile Black NFL players have also been linked to conservative politics. Lamar Jackson has had multiple moments that caught attention, including the old “Truzz Trump” interaction years ago and more recently reposting content from Charlie Kirk. Saquon Barkley was photographed golfing with Donald Trump and even flew with him to the White House, explaining that he respects the office regardless of who holds it. Antonio Brown ( probably CTE for him honestly) and Le’Veon Bell both publicly endorsed Trump and appeared at rallies. Herschel Walker is a longtime Trump associate who spoke at the Republican National Convention. Lawrence Taylor has voiced support for Trump as well. The Sanders family also comes up in this conversation, with Deion Sanders maintaining a friendly relationship with Trump and publicly interacting with him.
This does not seem limited to just a handful of players either. Articles and polls over the years suggest that NFL players as a group skew more conservative than many people expect, especially when compared to athletes in other major professional sports.
When you contrast this with the NBA, the difference is striking. NBA players are far more outspoken on progressive politics and social justice issues. LeBron James has openly endorsed Democratic candidates. Players like Marcus Smart and Tobias Harris used press conferences to demand justice for Breonna Taylor. Teams participated in protests, moments of silence, jersey messages, and coordinated league-wide activism. The WNBA did similar actions, including walkouts during the anthem and a 26-second moment of silence in Taylor’s honor. Political engagement in basketball feels visible, normalized, and even encouraged.
