parapluie - Wiktionary, the free dictionary
He immediately halted, and spread open his parapluie, which is popularly supposed to be the best object in the world for scaring off cattle; but instead of a bull, an ungainly human animal came scrambling over a stile, and in a moment stood before Twigg like a lion in his path, and scowling upon him from under a pair of black shaggy eyebrows.

r/etymology on Reddit: Are French "parapluie" and Spanish "paraguas" related?
April 23, 2018 -
Umbrella question. While in Spanish "paraguas" is a literal fusion between "para" (stop) and "aguas" (water), in French "parapluie" has "pluie" (rain) but "para" does not seem to mean anything. How much are this two words related?
The same applies for "parasol".
Edit: Most of the responses indicate a connection with Greek "para", is Spanish "para" in this case not from "parar" (to stop) verb?

Para is from the Greek παρά (pará) which often is translated to “against” or contrary to. Parapluie would then be against rain Parasol would be against the sun As both of these languages have roots en both Roman and Greek words they are closely related. Why it’s called umbrella in English on the other hand I never truly understood.

Surely, Para comes from the greek. The italian word for Umbrella is ombrello which stems from the latin, meaning small shadow. In fact, it was especially used to protect from the sunlight (as in all these old movies about 17th/18th century) and then its meaning was extended to the contemporary acceptation (as in Italian, where the word paracqua has basically become obsolete). According to my etymology dictionary, the English word rather than being derived from Latin via French, is directly connected to the Italian one.
