Joseph and his Coat of Many Colours | Storynory
One day, the brothers went to tend to their flocks in some far away pastures. Benjamin was still too young to go out and work, but Jacob sent Joseph to join the older brothers. He put on his coat of many colours and went out to look for them.

Is this what Joseph's coat of many colours really looked like?
It's one of those places where the Hebrew is confusing. The phrase kət̲ōnet̲ passîm can mean "coat of many colours" or "long robe with sleeves" (the phrase is also used in 2 Samuel 13:18). The translators of the Septuagint, 2300 years ago, thought the Hebrew meant "coat of many colours" (χιτῶνα ποικίλον), and many translations follow this. If "coat of many colours" is correct, it would have been woven with wool dyed with plant dyes. I'm not sure what dyes they would have had, but they would not have been as vibrant as modern dyes. r/Bible on Reddit: Is this what Joseph's coat of many colours really looked like?
October 17, 2024 -

In Genesis 37:3, Israel made his son Joseph 'a robe of many colours' (or 'a robe with long sleeves').

This garment is often depicted as a "technicolour" coat with lots of vibrant colours, but is this really what the biblical author had in mind?

A YouTuber recently visited a film studio to film objects from the Bible, and the coat they found for Joseph was much more muted than other modern interpretations ( https://youtu.be/ZcwgmHw21Xc ).

So, do we have a basis for saying what Joseph's coat really looked like, or can we only speculate based on this general description given in the Bible?

It doesn't matter what the coat looked like, the important matter was that it was Colored. Fabric back then was a basic thing, it was primarily based on the color of the material used. Wool would have been white, black, or browns. Cotton would have been white or brown. Leather would have been brown. Color on clothing was something rare. The dyes required for coloring cloth were expensive and hard to find. The color purple for example was created by harvesting the gland off one particular breed of clam and one clam could produce perhaps a drop or two of dye. It would take two or three gallons to properly dye a coat like Joseph's. It's not what the coat looked like, it's the fact that it was expensive! Joseph was given a great gift from his father. July 5, 2014 - The coat was not actually a coat that had many colors. The translation is a bit slurred. The Coat was actually a coat with markings…. the markings were and are sacred. The Act of Jacob giving Joseph the coat to wear was a priestly act that gave Joseph special endowed powers upon him.
