Speculation in early 1999 suggested ... latter trains off the W&C would have to undergo a large catch-up programme to receive all the modifications already made to the Central Line fleet, but this idea received serious consideration again in early 2001; it has since been abandoned, and indeed the Waterloo & City’s 1992 stock was itself sent away, refurbished and reinstated during the summer of 2006. In January and February 2004 the sixteen cars comprising the 4-car units of 1972 MkI tube stock ...

r/LondonUnderground on Reddit: Who loves the 1972 stock Bakerloo line trains ?
April 14, 2025 -
This is my favourite train on the London Underground right now. It’s the oldest one in service and I love them. It’s my dream to own the drivers cab carriage in a big garden btw did you guys see that they are getting refurbished ? New wheelchair access, screens and announcements but the big sofas are getting removed sadly. I love the motor noise it sounds very deep and the announcements make me so nostalgic. The train looks like it has a sad face with eyes. Some of the refurbished units are in service.

Nope, they are in dire need of replacement, but LU don't have the money to. I've been on one where the seats were so bad that everyone was standing. They were disgusting. The maintenance staff are constantly firefighting to keep them running and safe, with parts harder to come by and the regularly refurbished mechanical parts now fully wearing out after 50 years and they are doing as good a job as they can. The saloon refurbishment is happening because they have to. It is needed to meet the RVAR requirements and they no longer have an exemption for existing stocks (72 & 92). I don't think it's all carriages getting wheelchair bays, just middle ones, but I'm not 100% sure.

No Do Nothing Option: The Increasing Cost of Bakerloo Trains
March 18, 2015 - Whilst no one could be surprised, given the age of the stock, £70m doesn’t seem a large sum (particularly compared with the original estimate of £30m) to put matters right. Even allowing for the impact of discounting on the cost of new trains, the business case is surely robust? Given the amount of work involved, there may be a case for keeping the 1972 stock a bit longer than planned and replacing the Central and/or the Drain first.

July 1, 2021 - I recognise it’s required by RVAR but I do have to wonder why an exemption on the wheelchair bay requirement wasn’t granted for the 72 stock - the Bakerloo is one of the least-step free lines on the network, what journeys would a wheelchair passenger actually be able to make on the Bakerloo? All good and well making the trains wheelchair accessible but it’s pointless if the stations aren’t accessible.
