Under Canopy Lighting — Worth It or Just Extra Cost?
UCL is an interesting addition to growing cannabis and can be a valuable addition to the toolbox. Like everything else in the grow environment, "it depends". The best insight into UCL that I've found is in this video by Dr. Josh Hawley who's the head scientist at Fluence. Hawley's part of the video is about 30 mins and it's well worth the time to understand what Fluence has found. The concept is based on the fact that adding more light to the canopy ... Alongside CO₂
Some growers supplement grow spaces with additional CO₂, which plants need for photosynthesis. As they are able to photosynthesise more efficiently with a constant supply of CO₂, plants can make use of the extra light provided by side lights.

August 15, 2026 - Under-canopy LED lighting places low-wattage LED bars beneath the plant canopy, pointing upward to illuminate lower leaves and bud sites that overhead lights can’t reach. Commercial growers consistently report 20 to 35% yield increases, better bud quality, and improved cannabinoid profiles.

Maximizing Cannabis Growth: The Power of Under Canopy Lighting
February 7, 2025 - In another study published in 2018, researchers discovered that intracanopy lighting for medicinal cannabis cultivation improved light distribution and led to quantifiable enhancements in crop yield and quality. The study specifically reported that integrating LED interlighting resulted in a substantial increase in 'A' class flowers, accompanied by a notable five percent increase in THC levels across the crop. This targeted under-canopy lighting approach also yielded a higher overall crop output, with a reported increase in dry flower weight from 0.27 gram/mol under standard HPS lighting to 0.37 gram/mol when combined with LED interlighting.
