June 24, 2019 - does this also still apply for the new v6 of Proxmox? a) being supported well and b) doing any pci[e]-passthroughs to be not working easily? need to think about a possible solution for a client and right now a Threadripper 2950X would fit the job quite well. ... Yes, the kernel included in PVE 6 is newer and has even better support for Ryzen/Threadripper CPUs.

r/homelab on Reddit: Threadripper 32 core proxmox VM homelab server/workstation
August 21, 2020 -

Hi all,

I tring to build a proxmox homelab server to run some VMs. I need at least 32 cores as I have to test some SIEMs, create windows AD forest and get log correlations and test some advanced incident response tools.

I have already looked into AMD's Epyc processors, even if Max TDP and yearly running cost is lower on Epyc I think it's not the best buy for my usecase.

The system won't be running 24/7, I will only use it when I have do perform above tests and valuations.

I was thinking of the following setup:

AMD Threadripper 3970X 3.7 GHz 32-Core Processor
Noctua NH-U9 TR4-SP3 Dual Tower Cooler
MSI TRX40 PRO 10G ATX sTRX4 Motherboard
2x Samsung 970 EVO Plus SSD 1 TB
Corsair RM750x 750W
8x Crucial Ballistix Sport 3200 MHz 16GB
Quadro P400 2 GB Video Card
Dark Base Pro 900 rev.2 Case

Feedback and input are welcome, particularly from others who have built ThreadRipper for proxmox.

Did you encounter any issues for a similar built? How is the quadro p400 pass-through on proxmox or any other relevant information for the evaluation of the project?

I'm a VMWare admin, I don't know anything about Proxmox, but I have about 12 years experience running AD in virtual environments (with some hard learned lessons). Don't overestimate what you need for Domain Controllers - they use very little resource wise, even single core was generally fine in my last environment. You might be able to get away with saving a ton by dropping down to the R9 3950x. Make sure you have a good time sync setup and remember you can't snapshot AD VMs.

Well, unless you have use cases which demands the high frequency of TR, I would say going with an EPYC will be a better choice. I have a TR machine (1950x though) and also an EPYC machine (7451, 24C48T)) for the exact same use case as you do. I have in total around 60+ VMs (Splunk clusters, Kafka, NiFi, ZooKeeper, Elastic Stack, some BigData tools, Some windows VMS, etc) across these two boxes. And I haven't seen any issues yet. But I agree, it depends on use cases and if you have really heavy simulations and all which can push those threads, you may very well utilize the TR high frequencies. But if you don't have those kind of requirements, all you need is more cores and more RAM. You don't really need the high clock of a TR especially considering it's price. Why I would recommend EPYC: Registered ECC RAM is cheap compared to Unbuffered ECC you may get for TR Much higher RAM capacity You will go with a server board , and those server boards have handy features like IPMI and plenty of PCIe lanes and slots Runs cooler and you wouldn't need a beefy cooler. I am running mine with a Dynatron A26 Used First Gen EPYC is damn cheap now in Ebay. You could get a 32C/64T one for around 500$ or even less. Boards like EPYCD8/EPYCD8-T2 are kind of cheap compared to top of the line TR boards and with a lot more IO options And for the proxmox part. Yes, all my setup is with proxmox. Zero issues so far. Can't comment on the GPU pass-through since I haven't done that. But I was able to pass-through NIC and HBA without any issues. One more suggestion, If you decide to go with TR, I would recommend going with 32GB RAM sticks instead of 16. That will give the flexibility to expand to 256GB if needed.

r/Proxmox on Reddit: Trying to choose a Ryzen CPU for Proxmox home server
August 5, 2024 -

I'm investing in a new Proxmox host to migrate from my existing ESXi setup. Current VM's are:

  • Windows Server 2022 running Blue Iris NVR (v5) - 10 cameras

  • Lubuntu 20 for Logitech Media Server, Plex Media server, Home Assistant, VPN, Mediawiki, Web Server and file server

  • Windows 10 for PVR software & general testbed environment.

Any views on which of the CPU's on this list would be the most sensible option, given the above workload? Do I really need a 12-core 7900X?
