November 25, 2025 -

I haven't read jacqueline wilsons faraway tree book, but I read in a review of it there's a part where moonface expects silky to do the washing up and the children tell him off for believing in senior stereotypes, but I own and have read all three of the original books and I'm am 99% percent certain their was never any part where moonface expected silky to clean up just because she was a girl, so including something like that in the new book, feels quite random and out of place, for anyone on here that's read the book, how does the scene actually go ?

Im not saying the original books were completely free of sexism, in the second book when Joe and Rick go to rescue saucepan man in the land of toys, joe tells moon face to look after Beth, franny and silky and even then he's their older brother so it's understandable he'd want them to be safe, just not because their girls.

Instead of addressing things that never happened in the original books ( moon face making silky clean his house for him and silky not be allowed to learn magic), it would have made more sense if instead they did a scene where when moonface and silky take the children up to a magical land at the top of the tree, moon face tells mia, birdy and silky to stay close to him and milo so they can look after them, which annoys mia and silky and they tell noon face that girls are capable of taking care of themselves, would anyone agree ?

I disliked that book. Moon face was irritating, Silky was pathetic, Birdie was spoiled.

I've found two mentions: ‘Oh, Moonface!’ said Silky, sighing deeply. ‘I only cleaned your room yesterday and now look at it!’ Mia blinked in astonishment. ‘Don’t blame me, Silky! It was all those rabbit children. We were having a little party,’ said Moonface. ‘You’re the biggest child of all!’ said Silky. ‘Once I’ve helped these children get home I suppose I shall have to come back and start cleaning all over again. Which means there will be no time at all for cake making! And it serves you right!’ Milo was astonished. Mia was angry. ‘Why on earth should it be Silky’s job to clean up after you, Mr Moonface?’ she said. ‘It’s terribly old-fashioned to expect a woman to keep a house tidy, especially when it’s not even hers. My mum and dad share all the chores, and we have to help too.’ Birdy couldn’t be bothered with household responsibilities. She waded through the litter and took Silky’s hand. And: ‘I spent ages tidying his home yesterday and he promised to mend his ways. Well ha, ha! He came knocking at my door this morning complaining that he couldn’t find his favourite jacket and wondering if I’d borrowed it. As if I’d want to wear it! Anyway, I went up to help him find it and discovered he’d tipped every single item in his wardrobe all over the floor. It was knee-deep in clothes! And when I eventually found his jacket for him it was tumbled up in his bedclothes. He’d worn it while sitting up in bed last night reading his book of magic spells.’ ‘Moonface can do magic?’ Mia asked excitedly. ‘Well, he’s only on Book Two – still quite simple stuff,’ said Silky. ‘If you’ve got any warts, I expect he could cure them – or he can charm a bat out of your hair if it happens to get tangled there.’ ‘I don’t think we’ve got any warts or tangled bats,’ said Milo. ‘Can you do magic, Silky?’ Birdy asked. Silky sighed. ‘I’m sure I could, but the Enchanted Wood is a very backwards, old-fashioned place. Girls are only taught domestic skills at Enchanter School. Imagine!’ 'But girls are just as clever as boys,’ said Mia indignantly. ‘Sometimes cleverer!’

There is a magic faraway tree movie and I have now seen it (no spoilers)
Yes the trailer definitely turned me off. And your review “I will never watch it again” sums up how I thought it would turn out. I have no time for mediocre “ok” movies anyway. Thanks for the review. More on reddit.com

The original Moonface? - The Enid Blyton Society
As a child reading the Faraway Tree series, I did wonder about Moonface. It was said he was called that because his face was big and round like the moon but I don't think the story ever said what Moonface was. It was said Silky was an elf, then there was Mr Whatisname the gnome, and the angry pixie, all in the tree, and Dame Washalot. I used to wonder what sort of magical ... March 28, 2026 -

I've always been a fan of the innocence and very casual adventure of those books.

It's always a bit of a vulnerable moment to watch a movie of something you've read and imagined your own version.

I off a no spoilers post viewing take:

Despite the likely indignation that you'll experience when you watch the trailer, it was actually an extremely inoffensive rendition. If anything, the trailer is definitely the worst possible depiction because you are going to be made aware that the absence of wifi will be invading your story and that your (possibly beloved) moon face does not, in fact have a moon face.

TLDR: I do not believe I will ever watch it again but they didn't wreck it (*cough* wheel of time *cough*).

Well, there's the power of imagination for you! I know it's been discussed before how the original illustrator of the Faraway Tree books, Dorothy Wheeler, drew Moon-Face as a sort of elf-like or gnome-like character who happens to be mostly bald with a roundish head, but otherwise "normal": ...

January 9, 2026 - In the book, the children can’t wait to go adventuring once their chores are completed; they meet the brownies/elves in the enchanted wood who tell them about the faraway tree after they help them by stopping a gnome from stealing their bag. (perhaps the returned purse is following a similar storyline). I love that they have cast Nicola Coughlan as Silky – very cool. I love that they have cast Nonso Anozie as Moonface.
