Oud - Wikipedia
2 weeks ago - It may refer to the wooden plectrum traditionally used for playing the oud, to the thin strips of wood used for the back, or to the wooden soundboard that distinguishes it from similar instruments with skin-faced bodies. Henry George Farmer considers the similitude between al-ʿūd and al-ʿawda ("the return" – of bliss). Multiple theories have been proposed for the origin of the Arabic name oud. The word oud (عود) means "from wood" and "stick" in Arabic. In 1940 Curt Sachs contradicted or refined that idea, saying oud meant flexible stick, not wood. A western scholar of Islamic musical subjects, Eckhard Neubauer, suggested that oud may be an Arabic borrowing from the Persian word rōd or rūd, which meant string.

The Oud Musical Instrument
The sound of the Oud vibrates within its hollow body. It is made of a rounded back, which is enclosed with a soundboard, a flat sheet of wood, whereas, the backside of it is made of 15-25 strips of wood. Usually, the open side of the back portion is known as the rosette. There are mainly 2 distinctive features of this musical instrument- one is its pear-shaped body and the second is its fretless neck.

[question] why do guitars sound different to middle Eastern instruments like the 'oud'
There are a couple of major differences between guitars and ouds that make direct comparisons harder. First, the oud is strung in double courses, while (outside of 12's) guitars are usually single course. Second and much more importantly, the Oud is fretless and guitars, generally, are not. As I understand it, Arabic music sometimes divides an octave into twenty four sections rather than twelve. That, more than anything, will affect how its sound is perceived. It might be easier to directly compare to a fretless cittern (this would be unusual) - sometimes, accurately or not called an Irish Bouzouki - which often has a 'teardrop' shape and double courses. I would say that there would be strong tonal resemblances. A renaissance Lute without frets would also be a possible comparison, but the fingerboard of the Lute is much wider. More on reddit.com

Best places that sell high quality Oud (musical instrument)?

I am in the look for a good oud. Been to all places in Kuwait. The collection in Kuwait is very little, surprisingly.

Jawharat Salmeen is the most famous but their collection is terrible, they have been going downhill over the years. There is a store in Al Mulla Complex in Hawally that belongs to Mutref Al Mutref. The store is in their basement. I was just there and they have good quality Ouds for 160 KD. I did not negotiate further. It is above my budget. I was planning on a 100 KD one. Across the street is Zeryab. They have 3-4 high quality ones 150-270 KD.

One store called Guitara in Hawally. Do not go. The guy who works there has an attitude and the store lacks collection. Another store called عودك رنان. Close to Zeryab and close to the traffic light. Has a few good quality ones.

There is another Salmeen in Khaitan. They have a good collection actually. Few 250 KD ouds.

For me, I settled on 75 KD one sold on instagram. "Zryab1966". Syrian Oud.

I am not expert but I did not like any of the ouds I tried in these stores. I looked up Youtube and Saudi Arabia has great stores selling Oud and for really good prices.

Regarding the word oud (music instrument)
If you were speaking Arabic, you'd say al oud. (Oud rhymes with food.) And if you were a crusader or maybe a more friendly visitor, you might construe that as 'a lood' or 'a lute' and bring one back to Europe with you. True story. More on reddit.com

Answer (1 of 2): The oud is perhaps the oldest stringed instrument and is of Arabic origin. Similar to the lute, it is pear-shaped but has a thinner neck. A more important difference is that it has no frets to assist in placement of the fingers.

It may surprise people to learn that music and the notes and the frequencies of those notes are not universal. Western music generally uses whats called 'twelve tone even temperament' and even has a standardized frequency to use for the notes ( A440 . Before standardization on 440 Hz, many countries and organizations followed the French standard since the 1860s of 435 Hz, which had also been the Austrian government's 1885 recommendation.[1] Johann Heinrich Scheibler recommended A440 as a standard in 1834 after inventing the "tonometer" to measure pitch,[2] and it was approved by the German Natural History Society the same year.[3] The American music industry reached an informal standard of 440 Hz in 1926, and some began using it in instrument manufacturing. In 1936 the American Standards Association recommended that the A above middle C be tuned to 440 Hz.[4] This standard was taken up by the International Organization for Standardization in 1955 (reaffirmed by them in 1975) as ISO 16.[5] While most western instruments use even temperament the oud I believes uses just intonation . This is a mostly uninformed overview of the differences. I can't speak at length about them but its a basis for more reading. There are so many different ways to work with music tones than just the compromise that western music has settled on. Even tuning your guitar to something other than A440 elicits a different sound. Its sorta like how different Jimi Hendrix or SRV's guitars sounded detuned to E flat standard but more subtle. A lot of those tonal differences you hear come down to how notes are spaced or even further divided than the 12 tone system. Microtonal music is fascinating.
