Why does the US care about the Nord Stream 2? Do you personally care about it?

I’d rather not see a Europe wildly dependent on a shitty oligarchy that seriously wishes to undermine US and European interests across the globe.

You assertion is so bizarre “isn’t it for the European voter to decide.”

Yes. Duh.

Does that mean we can’t say “hey this is a bad idea.” Last I checked we couldn’t force Europeans to vote one way or the other.

Just imagine if Europeans never complained about US plans that only tangentially effect them.

What do you think about Nord Stream 2?

Yup. Germany has more or less shut down its nuclear power to focus on renewable resources, but then they go ahead and decide to get a new pipeline from Russia. What Russia gets out of it is more leverage against Eastern Europe. Altogether an awful, awful idea.

Russia accused of sabotaging Nord Stream pipeline as bubbles spew from Baltic

Logically, until the static pressure in the pipe bleeds off it would be better to set that on fire.

The resulting CO2 would be a much less damaging greenhouse gas than the unburned escaping methane is.

Nord Stream 2 leak a 'danger to ships' as Denmark issues Baltic Sea warning

Two more leaks are now reported on the Nord Stream I as well. The leaks on NS 1 are 70 km from the leak on NS 2.

They're in the Baltic sea close to Danish territorial waters near the island of Bornholm.

Danish Defence has released a video of the leak(s):

How Nord Stream 1 Rewired German Gas | Energy Headlines Versus Trendlines | CSIS
In other words, it is hard to look at the data and conclude that Nord Stream 1 adversely impacted European gas security: it reduced transit through Ukraine for a few years, and it eventually allowed Russian exports to rise; but fundamentally, it mostly changed how the Czech Republic receives its Russian gas; it helped Ukraine import non-Gazprom gas; it offset the precipitous fall in Dutch gas production; and insofar as it turned Germany into a hub, it did so alongside the Yamal-Europe pipeline that crosses Poland. Nord Stream 2 will, of course, create its own market and geopolitical dynamics; but a reality check on Nord Stream 1, especially against some dire predictions made a decade ago, might lead to a more rational conversation about Nord Stream 2 today. March 21, 2026 - On 2 September 2022, the company announced that natural gas supplies via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline would remain shut off indefinitely until the main gas turbine at the Portovaya compressor station near St Petersburg was fixed due to an engine oil leak. Gazprom justified this by claiming that European Union sanctions against Russia had resulted in technical problems, preventing it from providing the full volume of contracted gas through the pipeline; Siemens Energy, which maintains the turbine, rejected this and stated that there are no legal obstacles to its provision of maintenance for the pipeline.

Nord Stream Gas Pipeline - Global Energy Monitor
December 4, 2024 - Russian and German officials have claimed that the pipeline leads to economic savings due to the elimination of transit fees (as transit countries would be bypassed), and a higher operating pressure of the offshore pipeline which leads to lower operating costs (by eliminating the necessity for expensive midway compressor stations).[137] According to Ukrtransgaz, the Ukrainian gas transportation system operator, Ukraine alone will lose natural gas transit revenues up to $720 million per year.[138] Gazprom has stated that it will divert 20 billion cubic meters of natural gas transported through Ukraine to Nord Stream.[139]

Nord Stream Pipeline - Introduction
February 26, 2022 - Pipes have a diameter of 1,220 millimetres (48 in), the wall thickness of 38 millimetres (1.50 in) and a working pressure of 220 bars (22 MPa). Western European pipelines - The Western European part of the project includes two transmission pipelines in Germany. The southern pipeline (OPAL pipeline) runs from Greifswald to Olbernhau near German-Czech border. It connects Nord Stream with JAGAL (connected to the Yamal-Europe pipeline), and STEGAL (connected to the Russian gas transport route via Czech and Slovak republics) transmission pipelines.
