I was born in the heart of mormondom, in the shadows of the BYU campus. As such, I got the full dose of the Brighamite mormonism that was on offer. I left mormonism and languished in jack mormonism for a long time. I found this subreddit and became curious about other variants of Smith's Latter Day Saint movement. The anti-LGBTQ attitudes of Nelson's church are (and were) a big deal at the time. Likewise, anti-feminist attitudes that saw Kate Kelly excommunicated and Kristy Money silenced (on pain of further discipline) over women and the priesthood, i.e. the ordain women movement. The Community of Christ seems to have solved both of those ideas so I decided to go and see for myself. I attended for almost two years, ending in 2016. I wrote about my experience here . I never took communion out of respect for Smith's statements in D&C 20 and the RLDS' longstanding closed communion—despite it clearly being offered as a liberalization to all of those who wish to be counted among Jesus' flock. My main motivation for wanting to attend Community of Christ was to see for myself whether they are living up to their reputation of being open and accepting. While there (in the Salt Lake congregation) I saw a handful of refugees from Brighamite mormonism, mainly for the reasons above, but also for more freedom in assessing how to deal with Smith's works. Moving the Book of Mormon to a metaphorical space was a front burner issue for some. While there I also learned a lot more about the New Testament—Sunday bible study was fine. They would occasionally print verses from the Book of Mormon on the program, which uh, I didn't much like. The sermons were definitely left leaning—embracing causes generally associated with liberal ideas: feminism, LGBTQ+ equality, environmentalism, social equality, etc. As a liberal, these were in my wheelhouse, but I see constant complaints about right-wing politics being part of Nelson's church and liberals being marginalized. In a "shoe is on the other foot" sense, conservatives would feel out of place at Community of Christ, especially with the cult-of-Trump taking control of the mainstream Republican party. The Community of Christ is quite a squishy church. It can be whatever you want it to be. The people I met were quite nice and loving and I really enjoyed my time there. However, I have since learned that they may let local control take precedent. For example, I have learned that their Pastor Nancy Ross was forced to splinter from the standing congregation in St. George, Utah because the old-timers were deeply soaked in prejudice and weren't about to go along with the liberal stands being put forward—I assume non-feminists, anti-LGBTQ still pervasive. I also engaged with a short Q&A with their high-profile ex-Brighamite pastor in Toronto, John Hamer, link . He tried to assert that Joseph Smith has nothing much to do with the movement any more. That their church has moved past him. I can't agree. The priesthood exists in power tiers. The president of the church is appointed, not voted on in any democratic sense. I have written more about this recently, but that's the general gist. Community of Christ is both the same and not the same as Brighamite mormonism on many planks. There are a lot of churches endorsed by the NCC, including Community of Christ. A lot of them are trying for many of the same goals.
