What Is a Holistic Doctor & Where Can I Find One?
October 30, 2025 - A holistic doctor treats patients using a whole body approach. That means they focus on your body, mind, spirit and emotions when diagnosing and treating you.
Does anyone here believe in holistic medicine?
It depends on your definition of holistic health. Do I believe that essential oils or crystals can cure my chronic migraine? Absolutely not that’s quackery. But do I try my best to use non-medication treatments alongside my medication? Yes. When I get a migraine attack I use heat and cold treatments in different places, drink peppermint tea, try to eat fruits and vegetables and drink water, etc. And then when I’m not having an attack there are certain foods I avoid that I know can trigger an attack, so I stay away from those. I try to stay hydrated and I take vitamin D supplements. Also getting outside time and not having too much screen time, spending quality time with love ones, etc. That’s all alongside taking both preventative and abortive western medications. To me that is holistic health, doing all of those things alongside medications, hence the name holistic because you’re looking after all parts of your health. That is the medical definition as it is a medical concept. But pseudoscience isn’t holistic health, at least to me. More on reddit.com
Do MDs not treat patients holistically?
Its a bogus statement regardless of who says it. Medicine will always be ‘hollistic’ since we always cater towards the staging and needs of patients… Holistic does not mean prescribing anything for everything. Its just an allure that whomever says to stand out. More on reddit.com
I think Alternative Medicine is bullshit. CMV.
For things like pain relief, relaxation, and other non dangerous areas of discomfort, Alternative Medicine is great. The reason is that even if we assume that most of them have no real backing, the Placebo effect is still really powerful medicine. Even knowing that the treatment is a placebo does not stop the effect. These will not cure diseases (presumably), but will be just as effective at curing your headache. What is important is knowing the difference, and allowing the placebo only to be used when it is a proper medicine. More on reddit.com

Let's say you've got someone who's bad at studying. A simple approach might be to think that they might have a learning disorder or struggle with a specific subject. A holistic approach is to take a look at the bigger picture to see what might be affecting the study. Where are they studying? Is it in a quiet place away from distractions? When are they studying? Are they able to study at a point of the day when they're fresh and able to concentrate or are they studying at midnight after an 8 hour shift of work? Are they in a good place mentally to study or is their home life stressful always difficult? A holistic approach is one where you consider the surrounding factors of something to see if there's anything that's indirectly causing issues More on reddit.com

January 22, 2025 - CPD can be broadly defined as any type of learning undertaken which increases a practitioner’s knowledge, understanding and experiences of a subject area or role. Practitioners should be responsible for identifying their own learning needs and they should reflect regularly on their standards of practice. At the BHMA we believe that the personal development aspect is as important as subject knowledge. A truly holistic practitioner should be growing into a more compassionate and wise human being.

The term “holism” refers to the theory that all parts of a whole are intimately interconnected. According to holism (from the Greek “holo,” meaning “whole”), it’s a mistake to study just one part, or even multiple parts separately, if we really want to understand how they work together. Applied to health, holism means treating the whole person — taking into account more than just the physical symptoms of disease or injury. Holistic health practitioners may ask themselves and their patients to deeply consider the ways that bodies, minds, spirits, relationships, and the spaces we inhabit all coalesce — manifesting and shaping one’s health outcomes and well-being.
