How are the taxes on investing in stocks and ETFs?
Tax law on benefits is pretty hard. I think it is 34% tax, no way to avoid it. Plus you will want an ASK konto if you don't want to pay tax eachtime you sell stocks to reinvest. If you keep IBKR, you will have to notify every year every action you have sold, and pay a tax on the benefit you made More on reddit.com

Norwegian TAX payer. Invest in US ETFs or only EEA countries?
I would stick to Ireland-domiciled funds. You can see why here and research them on justETF . Since the introduction of PRIIPs , it's nearly impossible for Europeans to buy US-domiciled funds anyway. More on reddit.com

What are the similarities and differences between ETFs and mutual funds?
ETFs and mutual funds both offer diversified exposure to main asset classes and are typically UCITS funds. However, ETFs can be bought through a stockbroker or trading platform at any time during the trading day, while mutual funds are purchased via a fund management company and only once per day. ETFs are priced continuously throughout the day, providing high transparency, whereas mutual funds are priced once daily and their transparency can vary.

25 Top Picks for Tax-Efficient ETFs and Mutual Funds
June 10, 2026 - Although they’ve been eclipsed by “popular kid” ETFs in recent years, the small subset of tax-managed funds has historically done a terrific job of limiting taxable capital gains. Vanguard’s suite of tax-managed funds is a standout in this small group. Its funds closely track indexes and benefit from low turnover; they also layer on additional tax-management techniques such as tax-loss harvesting and downplaying dividend-payers. Their expense ratios are ultralow, and their tax-cost ratios are on par with or even lower than comparable ETFs.

August 24, 2026 - Over eleven years of investing in EU ETFs, I have compared many national systems. Norway stands out because the ASK rewards patience and good housekeeping. Several Norwegian readers have told me it changed how they rebalance. One reader had been avoiding a needed fund switch purely to dodge a tax bill. Once he moved the holding into an ASK, that fear disappeared. He switched, cut his fund cost, and never triggered a disposal tax.

r/Norway on Reddit: How are the taxes on investing in stocks and ETFs?
August 27, 2024 -

Hi,

I am going to move in Norway and I would like to ask about my investments. I am sending money for several years to Interactive Broker where I buying some ETFs and stocks for my retirement. In my current country where I live in it was possible to avoid the taxes after holding these assets for some time.

For instance when I bought ETF in 2020 and I will keep it for 3 years and then sell it, I don't need to pay taxes for it. I found out that similar exception have many countries, is something similar also in Norway? If yes, how it is called in norwegian?

Second question is about general advice. When I am holding assets like this, do I need inform some norwegian institutions or something about it, or what are my responsibilities?

Thank you

Hello everybody,

coming from Italy I'm used to hearing how investing in ETFs it's better than investing in funds (same perfomance, lower costs).
Now here in Norway I opened an Aksjesparekonyto (ASK) account to invest some money, but I noticed that most of the ETF I looked for are not available to buy in it.
The advantage of the ASK account is that money is not taxed until withdraw, but if I plan on investing in the long term in ETFs that accumulate (so they don't pay dividends) would it be worth to open a normal trading account?
Or just stick to use tha ASK account and just get funds (more expensive, but still cheap compared to what I was used to?
Thanks for the help, I haven't grasped the whole taxation side yet....

r/eupersonalfinance on Reddit: Norwegian TAX payer. Invest in US ETFs or only EEA countries?
October 17, 2020 -

Hello, I am getting started in Investing. A lot to learn.

I live in Norway (EEA country) I am must inclined by ETFs (buy and hold).

I make some ETFs research mainly domiciled in US. I have to check EU/EEA and Norwegian ETFs.

I am doing my research but, I fill a little overwhelmed with the Norwegian TAX Administration (skatteetaten.no) with all the regulations and technicalities.

The question is, I should stay away from US domiciled ETFs? I should only consider European Economic Area (EEA) domiciled ETFs?
