August 29, 2026 - Count only active, registered lines — not expired or unactivated cards. In Malaysia, non-citizens are capped at two per provider2. 📍 Step 3: Eliminate false constraints Invalid worry #1: “I need five SIMs to get better coverage.” Reality: Signal quality depends on tower proximity and band support — not quantity. Invalid worry #2: “eSIM replaces physical SIMs, so the 5-SIM limit won’t affect me.” Reality: In Malaysia and Thailand, eSIMs count toward the same biometric-linked cap — no exemption2.

eSIM cards have been the biggest pain in my experience. Really wish we didn’t have them
The issue isn’t eSIM, it’s a crappy carrier that thinks they’re doing you a favour by auto setting everything up for you. More on reddit.com

ELI5: Why are sim cards still used? Couldn't they just be done in software with modern smartphones?
The entire point of SIM cards is to have a hardware component that is replaceable and tied to an account. This is not a flaw in the design, it's a key feature.. It allows account switching on devices without tying up valuable phone company employee time. The account is tied to the SIM, not the phone. More on reddit.com

eli5 Why are SIM cards still a thing?
A great thing about SIM cards is that they’re easily and quickly transferable from one phone or other cellular device to another....by the consumer. You don’t even have to go through your carrier to make the switch. You just need a paper clip to eject the SIM card trays from both devices. Some folks who travel frequently even want phones with two SIM cards to make it easier to switch between networks. For some, myself included, SIM cards are a feature, rather than a bug. People also ask

Do all cell phones have SIM cards?
Yes, all cell phones have SIM cards. Some smartphones support physical SIMs, while others, like the iPhone 18 or Google Pixel 10, are eSIM only. eSIM-only phones still have a SIM — it’s just embedded in the device instead of slotted into a tray.

Which is better — a SIM card or an eSIM?
An eSIM is considered a better alternative to a physical SIM card. An eSIM is easier to set up, since you won’t have to handle a physical SIM card. Additionally, if you lose your phone, you can contact your mobile network provider to disable the eSIM remotely so that no one can access or use your data or number.

Pros & Cons of eSIM Cards for Travel - Travel Like Anna
5 days ago - Most eSIM brands will let you buy top-ups in advance, which I do for safety. If I don’t use it, I simply ask for a refund. Lately, I’ve been using unlimited data plans. Yes, there are several eSIM companies that offer an unlimited data option, but read the fine print. The word “unlimited” is deceptive because there’s always a “fair use” data limit, where you get a set amount of high-speed data (usually 3-5GB) per day.
