Number of Journalists and Media Workers Killed, By War.
A total of 70 journalists were killed in World Wars 1+2 combined?!? That’s impossible to believe. I’m willing to bet that the bombing of Hiroshima alone killed around that many. The number of 70 for the entire wars is nothing short of absurd. Which immediately makes me suspect that the whole “study” is bullshit, and was likely concocted to make a political statement about current affairs. More on reddit.com

Who do you think are the great journalists of our time?
Ronan Farrow. Absolutely top tier investigative journalism, and has an admirable willingness to recognise the benefits afforded by having well-connected celebrity parent(s) to his career, even though in his case it also had obvious downsides as well. More on reddit.com

Gershkovich and Kurmasheva lead the latest list, which also draws attention to the plight of jailed reporters in Ethiopia, Hong Kong, Rwanda, and Myanmar. Also on the list are three journalists I’ve written about in this newsletter: José Rubén Zamora and Gustavo Gorriti—veteran muckrakers in Guatemala and Peru, respectively—as well as Shireen Abu Akleh, a Palestinian American reporter for Al Jazeera who was shot and killed while covering an Israeli raid in the occupied West Bank in 2022.
