Complementary Metal - Oxide Semiconductor. It's basically the memory of a motherboard. It is powered by a small battery called the CMOS battery (CR-2032). It looks like a large watch battery. A common PC troubleshooting step is to remove the CMOS battery in order to clear the CMOS' memory. The CMOS stores date, time and system setup parameters. CMOS stands for "Complimentary Metal Oxide Semiconductor". It's the technology we use to build the computer chips. There is a small amount of memory built into the motherboard using CMOS chips, which is often referred to as "CMOS RAM". This RAM is powered by a small battery often referred to as the CMOS battery. If the battery dies, all the data stored in that memory is lost. BIOS is the Basic Input Output System- it's the lowest level of software on the computer that gets run when you push the power button. It's the thing that actually handles talking to the hard drive and other hardware on the computer. The BIOS code is stored in read-only memory on the motherboard but the BIOS settings are stored in the CMOS RAM. If the battery is removed or dies, the BIOS settings get reset because the memory is lost. More on reddit.com
