Takeaways from the Pesticide Action Network’s latest “Dirty Dozen” list
This is a good synopsis. The Dirty Dozen in the United States has been thoroughly debunked. Chuck Benbrook has written extensively on dietary risk. Understanding exposure to pesticides through our diet is tricky. Check this out from the Heartland Health Research Alliance https://hh-ra.org/projects/the-dietary-risk-index-dri/ More on reddit.com
Eating conventional fruits and vegetables Dirty Dozen?
All the reading I’ve done has led me to my personal conclusion: that one of the most important things for good nutrition and overall health is to eat a large amount and a wide variety of fruits and vegetables. I (again, personally) have stopped worrying about pesticides. I do buy organic when it’s available, but I don’t choose to limit my fruits and vegetables. Everyone’s situation and preferences are different of course. I was more careful when feeding small children. More on reddit.com
Have you all seen the dirty dozen list? What are we supposed to feed our families?
The idea behind clean 15/dirty 12 isn't to avoid eating those 12 and only eat those 15, it's a guide for balancing buying. If you can afford it, buy all organic produce, but most of us can't, so if you can't, just get the dirty 12 organic as they are the worst offenders, and you don't need to worry about buying the clean 15 organic, conventional is ok. Who creates the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists?
The lists are published annually by the Environmental Working Group (EWG), a nonprofit organization. EWG analyzes pesticide residue data from the USDA's Pesticide Data Program, covering tens of thousands of produce samples across 47 fruits and vegetables. The 2026 dataset included 54,344 samples.

Dirty Dozen & Clean Fifteen 2026: EWG's Updated List
What changed between the 2025 and 2026 Dirty Dozen lists?
The actual twelve items stayed the same. Blackberries and potatoes remained on the list after joining in 2025. Rankings shifted slightly. The major new addition in 2026 was the first-ever spotlight on PFAS pesticide contamination, with PFAS detected on 63% of Dirty Dozen samples. EWG also noted green beans and peppers as near-misses that ranked highest on overall pesticide toxicity just outside the top 12.
