I use the tiller and motor to steer at the same time forward and backwards in a tight situation. Usually I just kick the tiller to the appropriate side and focus on the motor tiller and shift. I can practically get the boat to do spinners that way. My OB is on a mount that gives me plenty of ...

r/sailing on Reddit: Tips to Improve Tiller-Handling and General Skipper Technique?
March 14, 2017 -

Hi, I'm very new to sailing and am looking for some advice.

On my team, we sail mostly 420s, small boats where one person is "skipper" and works the tiller and mainsail and another person is "crew" and works the jib. This last season was my first and I exclusively handled the jib for more experienced sailors, and I've gotten pretty good at it!

My problem is I have only limited knowledge on how to actually sail and work the tiller on a boat. I've made a few attempts over the course of the season , but they've all ended poorly and/or with me getting too nervous because I'm afraid I'm going to crash into something.

My problems are working the tiller and handling the mainsail at the same time, and also overcoming my nervousness. I appreciate any advice that might help me in the upcoming season. Thank you.

tldr: inexperienced sailor having trouble controlling my mainsail and handling the tiller - any advice greatly appreciated!

I have had rudder-only steering in my outboard-powered sailboats. The outboards were locked in place. Prop walk can be a nuisance in tight spaces. My current boat has the outboard tied to the tiller. It works and gives me great maneuverability in tight spaces.

May 28, 2025 - Rocks, large stones, tree roots, and other obstructions make it difficult to till land. Large rocks especially get in the way of the tiller, so it’s best to move them before you till. With a wheelbarrow, walk up and down the land you want to till.

June 17, 2015 - As our steering cables and chain hadn't broken I didn't want to backdrive the system with much force with the tiller, but the boat responded no differently than it does to the wheel. If a cable had broken or a cable sheave had cracked the steering effort with the tiller would have been fairly minimal. We tried a bit of maneuvering (in open water) at idle and this, too, was no real challenge.
