GrapheneOS has moved from Reddit to our own discussion forum . Best Android softphone?
Bria (basic) is free - FYI. Also a Pixel user here. I've been using Bria and have used Zoiper, Grandsteam's wave, groundwire, etc. Bria has the best integration out of everything I have tried. Zoiper is a close second (I've had the Gold version of Zoiper from back in the days when they had one time fees for upgrade instead of subscription). More on reddit.com

Do apps need Google Play Services to work on GrapheneOS?
Most apps work without any Google Play Services — about 90-95% of Android apps. Apps that specifically require Play Services (for push notifications, maps APIs, or Play Integrity checks) either work via sandboxed Play or have sovereign alternatives. Every app in this list documents whether it needs Play Services, and this guide notes it per entry.

Can I use the Google Play Store on GrapheneOS?
Yes, via sandboxed Google Play. Install it from the GrapheneOS App Store, following the sandboxed Google Play section of grapheneos.org/usage. It runs as an unprivileged user app, not a system service, so Google cannot access your device the way it does on stock Android. For free apps without a Google account, Aurora Store is the better choice.

I'm going to be putting a soft phone app on my SO phone so that her phone will ring if i'm away for certain calls. What is the best softphone app that is free? I currently use groundwire paid but since this will be a limited time i'd rather find a free option for the couple weeks she will need it. A google serach said media5-phone and zoiper were the best options but wanted to get another opinion. I've used zoiper and didn't really like it that much.

For Android, CSipSimple is still a viable option... full featured, highly configurable, fully compliant with the RFC's, free and open source. Includes ZRTP e2e encryption, something Groundwire charges $33 CAD for. No longer actively maintained or on Google's Playstore, you can find the apk's here: https://csipsimple.ca . Capable of reliable inbound calls on mobile data, no need for a push service..

June 25, 2021 - Oses that can be used are GrapheneOS (My Android phone has this.), Calyx OS, Lineage, etc. There is a new phone called Pinephone that can have the Linux OS installed in various versions. Pinephone is more experimental and alot of hobbyists are playing with them. I've used Linux phones before as everyday phones and they worked fine. A de-Googled phone is made from the open source version of Android. If you make a call or use a particular app from Google on an original Google made phone like you see in any store, more than likely, the phone will contact Google with your location and other data.
