I personally think that every single human action including our reasoning and arguments is based on something emotional deep down, and that this is normal and fine. The motivation to make an argument is different from the argument itself. I buy a $10 pack of beer at the liquor store. I pay with $20. The cashier gives me $5 in change. The cashier gave me incorrect change. My motivation to argue with the cashier about their giving me incorrect change might be motivated by emotion, but the argument about the fact of how much change they did give me, and how much change they ought to have given me, is not an emotional matter. It's just arithmetic. Informal fallacies are fallacies of relevance. They occur when someone invokes a content or context that is not relevant to the argument being made. The appeal to emotion fallacy occurs when one invokes emotional content or context that is irrelevant to the argument being made. Bringing emotion into the argument about the cashier owing me $5 would not be relevant to the fact of the matter. This in contrast to arguments that are about emotion. Your girlfriend's cat died. You want to make her feel happier. She enjoys walking by the lake. You should take her for a walk by the lake. That might make her feel happy. The emotional context and content in that brief argument is not fallacious, because it is relevant. The argument is about the emotions of the girlfriend. Appeal to emotion is fallacious when the emotion is not relevant to the argument being made. My feeling ways about stuff is irrelevant to how much change the cashier owes me. A person feeling ways about their girlfriend, and how their girlfriend feels, is relevant when the argument is about the feelings. More on reddit.com

So what exactly is so bad about Appeal to Emotion? People are emotional beings and much of their behavior is driven by emotional factors. Are they not? For example, lets say that you operate an orphanage and would like to solicit donations for the organization from the general public. Do you demonstrate to people that it is reasonable and proper to help orphans? Or, do you demonstrate to people that these kids have such a crappy, sad life thereby eliciting an emotional response in people to help these kids? It seems to me that the latter would be much more effective in persuading people. What's so wrong about that?
It does not have to be just orphans obviously. It could be any issue where there is the possibility to motivate people via empathy for others. What is so wrong about drawing out people's empathy? Isn't empathy a good thing?

I would say the anti-vaccination folks are a good example of what is bad about appeal to emotion. Even after the data has been de-bunked, they are still using the emotional appeal to convince people to stop vaccinating their children.
