Factsheet
The $60B Ukraine aid bill passed today, with bipartisan support - as it passed, hundreds of mainly Democrat representatives cheered and waved Ukrainian flags in the House of Representatives.
To me, this seemed a little strange. As an Indian, in our Lok Sabha (the equivalent to your House of Representatives), we have an unwritten rule that the only flag allowed in the sacred chamber is the flag of the Republic of India. The point is to show that the House is ultimately the repository of the hopes and dreams of the Indian people, and no others. And that only having the Indian flag there at all times indicates that the MPs only serve the Indian people, not a foreign power.
So, a question to you Americans - is there no similar symbolic rule for your House? And if not, how do you feel about Democrats waving Ukrainian flags (or any foreign flags, really) in the American House of Representatives? Supportive, indifferent, opposed?
