What does this mythical growth stock company Palantir actually do ?
So I have a friend who is an officer in the Army. Here's his in field experience with it when he was overseas... They will send up a balloon with cameras attached to it to survey an area over an extended period of time. If the cameras pick up something out of the ordinary it flags it as an "abnormal activity." Looking at patterns like that might tip the military off to some event which is building. Ex. Noticing a person who doesn't belong in that area because they do not fit the mold of someone doing their daily tasks like a farmer tending his crops. In doing so AI can evaluate the activity to see if it's hostile or not. They can decide on a course of action then. That's my extent of what I know from his experience, and just over 50% of their business is govt contracts soooo... More on reddit.com

Can someone please explain what exactly pltr does that makes it so controversial?
The ELI5 is that palantir is a data analysis, visualization, and all things data integration company with some predictive analytics and AI. So what’s the controversy? Some don’t like that they work with the government; especially the government agencies and divisions that deal with war, national border maintenance etc. They basically make these agencies or divisions much more effective at what they do and if you are against the missions of said agencies, you’re going to be against a company like palantir. With your question about data privacy; I think it’s slightly misplaced. Palantir is the antithesis of a company like Facebook who uses your data to make money. Palantir doesn’t own data nor does it sell it. They actually work to give the owner the appropriate tools to work with their data or analyze it etc. But they themselves don’t do anything that would generally cause your data to be mishandled - that would come from the owner or user of that data. Just my opinion of course but after reading some of these response I wanted to give you an actual answer to your question or at least one redditor’s opinion. More on reddit.com
