Dering Woods (Screaming Woods) Said to be the most haunted forest in the UK
I used to live nearby and went one bright January afternoon with my wife for a walk around, we didn’t experience anything freaky, I just found it really peaceful and very muddy. Although I can’t vouch for what the atmosphere is like at night. More on reddit.com

My trip through “The screaming woods”
I know this will sound very odd. Did the burning smell have an acid smell to it like sulfur? Similar to a campfire, or did it just smell like fire? I know that is odd, but fire has a hot, low smoke odor. Like I said, it sounds really odd. More on reddit.com

r/Paranormal on Reddit: My trip through “The screaming woods”
May 31, 2024 -

So yesterday me and my mates decided to go to Pluckley (most haunted village in England supposedly) it was a lovely little town and we had a nice time in the village itself.

After which we made our way to ‘Dering woods’ nicknamed the screaming woods. And I will say as far as forests go it was a beautiful place with lush green fauna and a dense landscape but beyond the beauty of the forests lied a darker and more sinister look to us. In 1948 20 dead bodies were discovered in these woods making it very haunted (supposedly) we pulled up outside in the car park and got out we walked round the gates to the entrance and a man with a dog walked past us but my friend kian is convinced he saw a woman walking the way we would soon go (no one else saw her) keeping in mind my friend kian is a very honest and trustworthy guy. We kept walking deeper and deeper into the woods till the path we was on became overgrown and signs of human activity seemed to dwindle faster and faster, we then kept hearing what was a woman mumbling off in the distance, weird but not “paranormal” we hiked deeper and deeper and we was off trail now in the deepest part of the forest, this was when we asked “is anyone there please make yourself known” and I couldn’t lie about this If I tried and all my friends heard it we heard a woman maybe 30-40 whisper something unintelligible about 30 or so meters away from us we all froze and our hearts sunk we just made a beeline for the trail not knowing we was running deeper and deeper again we was lost at this point and the feeling of uneasy-ness had set in for us all the constant thumps off in the distance and the whispers seemed to get more frequent we wanted out at this point and so we kept searching for an exit whilst we were convinced we were being followed we made it out and we’re all okay but definitely a scary experience

Just to clear up there was no one in the woods with us the guy who drove us there stayed in the car for the 3 hours we was gone and he said no one entered those woods whilst we were in there and the man with the dogs left an hour after we went in.

Bloody Pluckley! I tell myself that it's reputation is vastly overrated but I'm not so sure. I used to be quite a rail enthusiast (not nearly as much as pre pandemic) and on occasion used to catch a train a few stations up to Pluckley as its a straight line and decent for photos. Standing alone on that platform for the best part of an hour I used to find the vibes unsettling especially in winter when it's getting dark. Several years ago there was an unusual train moving in the middle of the night and Pluckley was the closest station to me that it was passing through. My partner and I drove out there about 1am and found there was no mobile signal down the hill where the station is on either of our phones (different networks). We drove back up the hill and pulled into a gravel car park of a pub (I think) where we could keep an eye on the online info for a heads up on its progress. The moon was quite bright despite being mostly cloudy and it was a rather mild night. Whilst we sat there alone with the windows open we heard crunching of the gravel very much like footsteps approaching my side of the car (I was in the passenger seat). We could see enough to determine there wasn't a person or animal in sight despite it very obviously being just a few feet away by this point. We made the decision to abandon plans and quickly left - ngl that rattled me as it felt like we were being targeted. As we drove away we passed a bus shelter (an enclosed older style wooden thing) and as the headlights lit its interior I noticed what I can only describe as a huge black mass blocking the best part of two thirds of the interior from the left hand side. Whatever this was was higher than the top of the 'door' with its visible edge being quite round - blob like is the best description. This didn't look right to me so I asked my partner to turn around and do another pass. Unsurprisingly there was nothing blocking the light on the second pass (obviously turning back again to recreate the same angle as the first time albeit slower) so who knows what that black thing was. That night took Pluckley off my night time destination list and we haven't returned after dark since unless passing through on a well it train! I really wonder what it is about Pluckley that makes it such a supposed hot bed for this stuff?

The Whispering Woods of Pluckley | Horror
Kids who approached the woods usually returned terrified, crying, describing having seen somebody "with no eyes" looking back at them. Some never returned at all. In the 1950s, a London school teacher, Arthur Denning, moved to Pluckley for peace and tranquillity. A rational man, Arthur did not pay attention to the tales and viewed them as a myth. His curiosity was aroused, though, and on a foggy autumn evening, he went out to explore the Screaming Woods himself — with notebook, torch, and tape recorder in hand.

October 31, 2025 - One popular legend — considered to be one of the main reason's behind why the Screaming Woods were nicknamed as such — is about Robert du Bois, a highwayman who was either tortured, lynched or killed while being tied to a tree in the woods, his screams reportedly still echoing through the dense foliage. Another haunting tale speaks of a suicidal army colonel from the 18th century who apparently hung himself from a tree in the woods, and whose ghost can sometimes still be seen hanging.
