When to Fine-Tune LLMs (and When Not To) - A Practical Guide
While I get that things that can be solved with rag should not be fine tuned. What about fine tuning for base knowledge for rag? Say we have a complex project with its own vocabulary therefore model has no knowledge of it and of similar tools. Now I fine-tune the model to have a grasp of the project so it could produce better outputs in RAG. Does this make sense or it's better to prompt and rag regular model? More on reddit.com

AI model fine-tuning: what it is and why it matters
April 14, 2025 - Fine-tuning allows models to deliver high performance using smaller, domain-specific datasets. Instead of requiring vast amounts of general data, fine-tuned models learn from curated industry datasets, reducing training time and computational costs.

Fine-tuning (deep learning) - Wikipedia
1 week ago - Large language models like OpenAI's series of GPT foundation models can be fine-tuned on data for specific downstream NLP tasks (tasks that use a pre-trained model) to improve performance over the unmodified pre-trained model. Platforms such as Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit and Enterprise AIO exemplify how fine-tuned models are being used for entity-level monitoring; tracking how named entities are referenced and represented within responses generated by large-language-model-based answer engines.

What is Fine Tuning? | Databricks
A foundation large language model is a powerful, general-purpose AI trained on vast datasets to understand and generate human-like text across a broad range of topics and tasks. The ability to leverage the deep learning of existing models can reduce the amount of compute power and orchestrated data needed to tailor a model for specific use cases. Fine-tuning is the process of adapting or supplementing pretrained models by training them on smaller, task-specific datasets.

r/PromptEngineering on Reddit: Everyone’s Talking About Fine-Tuning AI Models, But What Does That Actually Mean? 🤔
January 2, 2025 -

If you’ve been following AI discussions recently, you’ve probably heard the term “fine-tuning” come up. It’s one of those ideas that sounds impressive, but it’s not always clear what it actually involves or why it matters.

Here’s a simple way to think about it: imagine a chef who’s mastered French cuisine and decides to learn Japanese cooking. They don’t throw out everything they know—they adapt their knife skills, timing, and flavor knowledge to a new style. Fine-tuning does the same for AI.

Instead of starting from scratch, it takes a pre-trained, general-purpose model and tailors it for a specific task or industry. Whether it’s an AI assistant for healthcare, customer service, or legal advice, fine-tuning ensures the model delivers precise, reliable, and context-aware responses.

In my latest blog post, I dive into:

  • What fine-tuning actually means (no tech jargon).

  • Why it’s a key step in making AI useful in specialized fields.

  • Real examples of how fine-tuning transforms AI into a valuable tool.

  • Potential challenges

If you’ve ever wondered how AI evolves from a generalist to an expert, this post is for you.
