What makes human sweat such a good solvent?
Sweat is mainly water with a few other substances. The question is better phrased as "why is water a good solvent?" "Water is capable of dissolving a variety of different substances, which is why it is such a good solvent. And, water is called the "universal solvent" because it dissolves more substances than any other liquid. This is important to every living thing on earth. It means that wherever water goes, either through the ground or through our bodies, it takes along valuable chemicals, minerals, and nutrients. It is water's chemical composition and physical attributes that make it such an excellent solvent. Water molecules have a polar arrangement of the oxygen and hydrogen atoms—one side (hydrogen) has a positive electrical charge and the other side (oxygen) had a negative charge. This allows the water molecule to become attracted to many other different types of molecules. Water can become so heavily attracted to a different molecule, like salt (NaCl), that it can disrupt the attractive forces that hold the sodium and chloride in the salt molecule together and, thus, dissolve it." Can we address that it's utter bullshit this isn't covered by warranty? This definitely falls under average home use, and clearly it's the fault of them considering it's happened to at least 8 different users I've seen on here the exact same way. Anyone who knows legal stuff, like u/VideoGameAttorney , wouldn't HTC be open to a class action or something? More on reddit.com

June 15, 2022 - But whether they are causing any significant breakdown of the material is something that scientists at WHOI are just starting to investigate. The uncertainty surrounding where and how quickly plastics break down has become a critical knowledge gap not only for scientists, but also for chemical companies and plastic manufacturers that want to design plastics that decompose faster into materials that are non-harmful and have minimal effects on the environment. One way to gauge the speed of degradation is by placing plastics—including “raw” plastics containing no additives, as well as consumer products such as Styrofoam cups—in specialized weathering chambers.

April 27, 2021 - The longevity of the type of plastic also impacts its toxicity. Several studies indicate that the more time the plastic floats around, the more pollutants it absorbs. For example, one study of California rivers found that small degraded microplastics carry higher concentrations of certain priority pollutants than virgin plastic.

Aggregation behavior of photoaging nanoplastics in artificial sweat solutions - ScienceDirect
February 1, 2025 - As a result, the change of physical or chemical properties of nanoplastics made them more dispersed or aggregated [28], [35]. Yu et al. found that aging could change the surface properties of plastics, which in turn affected their mobility in environmental media (seawater, freshwater, and soil pore water) [36]. Because there are no studies on the aggregation behavior of nanoplastics in sweat (Tables S1 and S2), experimental evidence is needed to clarify how photoaging affects the aggregation behavior of nanoplastics in sweat.

September 23, 2025 - Although it still sheds microplastics, this option reduces virgin plastic production. Bamboo fabric is naturally antibacterial, moisture-wicking and biodegradable. When laundering synthetic activewear, follow these simple steps to reduce microplastic release. Wash less frequently. Instead of washing sweaty clothes after every workout, allow them to air-dry and reuse them once in a while.

March 31, 2013 -

I've rubbed off old pen marks with sweaty fingers, seen countless console controllers and mice with the plastic exposed, remotes with faded or missing markings on their buttons and more.

It's not as effective as isopropyl alcohol, sure, but human sweat seems to be fairly decent at dissolving certain compounds. Why?

It's not necessarily the case that your sweat is the only thing that's wearing out the things you use. The friction between your hand and the devices (controllers/mice/buttons on remote controls) is probably the main factor. You can soak your plastics in water for months or years and they'll practically stay unchanged. That's why they use plastics for food containers and water bottles.

September 11, 2016 - Do any of you have experience of plastics exuding liquid? I moved the TV yesterday to do some work on the wall behind it and found my hands were wet with a brown sticky liquid a bit like spilt Coke. Thinking is was Coke I removed the rear casing from the TV and washed it with water/bathroom cleaner, rinsed it and left it to dry overnight. This morning I found the "Coke" stains had returned and it was sweating from what appear to be blisters in the material, both inside and outside surfaces are affected.

How To Make Plastic Material Not Sweaty? - DGYX
January 23, 2026 - In the world of modern plastic manufacturing, one of the most common challenges is the phenomenon known as “plastic sweating.” This occurs when moisture, additives, or plasticizers migrate to the surface of plastic products, giving them a greasy or wet appearance. For manufacturers producing packaging materials, consumer goods, or engineering plastics, this issue can harm product aesthetics, functionality, and durability.
