When was herod's death?
I think there were 3 calendar changes from that time to today so it’s a little complicated to pin point it exactly, but roughly 1-4bc. even jesus’s death is questioned from 28-33bc. The Julian calendar is at least somewhat similar to the Gregorian calendar we now use, but before the Julian in 45BC calendars were much more complicated, having additional months on random years to keep with the seasons More on reddit.com

The gospels make it very clear Jesus was conceived during the reign of Herod the great, who died in 4 BCE, how did early christian scholars overlook this fact when calculating the birth of Jesus ?

King Herod (The Great) died 4 years before Jesus was born...
Yeah the Gospels are rather sloppily researched fan fiction. The story of Jesus's birth is especially nonsensical. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Census_of_Quirinius Also you would never conduct a census by making people go to a city, since that would be the most inefficient and deadly way to do it. We don't make everybody pop into the state capital for the census now do we? More on reddit.com

If Herod died in 4 B.C.E/BC, then what is the big deal? This is the guy the Gospels spoke about.
The problem is that Luke claims that Jesus was born during a census while Quirinius was governor of Syria. That census was in 6 CE, 10 years after the death of Herodus the Great in 4 BCE. Here's a timeline: 4 BCE: Herod the Great dies. His kingdom is split in 4 pieces. His son [Herod Archelaus] ( https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Herod_Archelaus ) becomes tetrarch of Judea. Another son, Herod Antipas , becomes the ruler of Galilee. 6 CE: Herod Archelaus turns out to be a bad king, and the Jews ask the Romans to depose him. The Romans do so. They make Judea a part of the Roman province of Syria and appoint Quirinius as governor of Syria. Quirinius performs a census in Judea. Not in the whole Roman world, as Luke claims. Also not in Galilee, which was still ruled by Herodes Antipas. More on reddit.com
