How Much Should You Spend on a Quality Suit? | The Black Tux Blog
The average suit cost varies widely based on quality level, from around $200 at the budget end to $5,000+ for luxury options. The most important thing is finding the right balance of quality and price for your specific needs.
What does a good suit cost?
A "good" suite (meaning tailored and good material) you're looking at $1-5k, can go a lot higher. A reasonable suit off the rack, Men's Warehouse or Macy's $2-4 hundred (both should cut the coat and pants for a better fit). Remember shoes and a good shirt, makes all the difference. How much should I expect to spend on a made-to-measure suit?
For mtm it can vary a lot depend on fabric, who, and where it's made. 1000 is a reasonable starting point for a good fully canvassed suit, decent fabric, and made in China. Currently I have a mtm suit I commissioned costing me 1900, thats made in italy. You shouldn't be close to 4k though unless you are doing some high end designer. Which honestly you shouldn't do. You're approaching bespoke cost at that point or at least could do a semibespoke option from a reputable tailor. Like I did an edward sexton offshore bespoke for 3600. More on reddit.com

How Much Should a Suit Cost? | GQ
June 18, 2024 - A sub-$1,000 suit may not come with the prestige of a luxury label or the personalization of a high-end tailoring shop, but you can still find something great here if you do your homework. First, look for a suit with a high-quality (usually Italian-made) fabric that’s 100% wool (or 100% cotton or linen if it’s summertime) and a fully-canvassed or half-canvassed jacket.

February 6, 2026 - With some more breathing room in their budgets, designers can select premium fabrics in a wider range of colors and patterns and add flourishes like pick-stitching and hand-sewn buttonholes that make a suit look and feel more unique. For example, J.Crew’s $800 suits are made from Loro Piana cloth. At this price range, you even start to see European-made options produced in Portugal from higher-end brands like Todd Snyder, Polo Ralph Lauren, and Sid Mashburn.

January 5, 2022 -
I've got a formal event coming up and I'd like something nicer than I usually wear, i.e. black jeans and an old buttondown shirt. Ideally I would like to buy (or possibly rent) a new suit, but I have no idea what that costs. I could do 300-400$ but I've never bought one before. Will that be enough, what type of store should I go to, what kind of questions should I ask?

You can find one for $200 - $400. Getting fitted/measured is a must though. Spending a lot doesn't matter if it fits you like a burlap sack lol

How Much Should You Spend for a Suit? A Smart Man’s Guide to Dressing with Intention - ATL Tailor
April 4, 2025 - And don’t forget: the cost per wear of a premium suit often ends up being less than the cost of a cheap one worn a handful of times. There are moments when you want to look unforgettable—your wedding, a formal gala, an awards night, or a black-tie event. For these occasions, a standard off-the-rack option won’t cut it. The cost of a wedding suit for men is often higher due to luxury fabrics, custom details, and special construction.

A nice fit tailor men's custom suit will cost you $1500, including nice fabric, intricate detailing, and extras. Polyester and rayon are cheap fabrics that blend cotton and wool. The biggest fundamental difference between these two price points: on the higher end you can afford to have the suit custom made for your body, versus choosing the “closest” fit off-the-rack. As you can see in the photo above, there are a number of noticeable fit compromises with Towni’s $200 suit even after having it altered: The shoulder slopes are not adjusted for Townsend, causing a collar roll across the upper back/neck that’s so bad we can see it from the front (see the wrinkle at the top of Towni’s right shoulder, above where the lapels meet the collar).

When you see the polyester percentage on a piece of clothing, you need to understand how the polyester is manufactured and it's not immediately obvious. Target has an everyday slim suit which is at a very affordable price point and is made of 63% polyester, 35% rayon, and 2% spandex.
