What kind of temps? Are you carrying a full rack of gear and rope? I've been using a GG blaze 60 for everything short of long winter expeditions and it's been great. For day trips the mutant 38 is fine.

Check out backpacks designed for ski-touring, lots of them have dedicated pockets for shovel and probe. As far as crampons, I'd recommend getting a thick case for them if you plan to keep them on the inside, or just keeping them secure on the outside, not flapping around. Any winter overnighting I use my 60L just to accommodate the gargantuan 0f sleeping bag and extra clothing
