It’s not technically a button, it’s a cover. You have to pry it off to reveal the button. It’s a safety lock override AKA shift lock. Normally you can only put the car in park/out of park using the brake. This overrides the brake requirement. You can then move your car into neutral and start it from neutral or move the car manually if it has died. This is helpful in really limited situations. In my 2006 Tacoma, I can not shift without using the override button. The fuses (per the manual) for the lights look good and all of the lights work properly (tail lights, brake lights, back up lights, turn signals). Any other thoughts on what is causing the need for me to use the override?

In the current model 4Runner, if you insert your key, turn it to accessory and depress the brake you can move the shifter out of park and into neutral. You can actually roll the 4Runner without the engine running but you do have to do the procedure I mentioned above.
