(Figure: A schematic illustration from Joachim’s Liber Figurarum, depicting a seven-headed dragon from the Book of Revelation – one of the apocalyptic symbols central to his prophecies.) Joachim of Fiore is most famous for his visionary philosophy of history, often called his doctrine of the “Three Ages.” He taught that human history comprises three vast epochs or statuses, each governed by one Person of the Trinity and reflecting a progressive increase in spirituality.

The Papal Prophecies of Blessed Joachim di Fiore – Sensus Fidelium Press
The Papal Prophecies of Blessed Joachim di Fiore
Before the prophecies attributed to St. Malachy appeared, the most widely circulated collection had been that attributed to Blessed Joachim di Fiore. Today, these older and more cryptic prophecies are virtually unknown outside of scholarly circles. Despite their attribution to Joachim, it is to be noted that the true origins of this earlier work remain shrouded in mystery: even the role of Joachim as author is not certain. Nevertheless, it is evident that this collection is some centuries older than the St. Malachy prophecies and is a genuine Medieval work, as the many extant manuscript copies

The Origins And Antecedents Of Joachim Of Fiore's (1135-1202) Historical-Continuous Method Of Prophetic Interpretation
The analysis of the eschatological commentaries antecedent to Joachim of Fiore reveals that besides a number of unique features, Joachim’s hermeneutical framework primarily combines: (1) the historical periodization of Church history characteristic of the expositors in the Latin High Middle Ages, in the early Byzantine period, and Near-Eastern Christian exegesis, (2) Latin medieval tradition of Revelation exegesis dominated by the recapitulation principle and, (3) a Near-Eastern Christian (Armenian, Syrian, and Coptic) and Jewish system of prophetic interpretation using the “year-day” principle, coupled with the expectation of the future Sabbatical period, sometimes referred to as the millennium.
