Lets also not forget that Israel was in talks with Palestine when the british were leaving the area and were willing to give up majority of the land, however palestinians were unhappy with that and wanted all the land. My post covers a range of related claims -- one section addresses the idea that a majority of the Palestinian Arab population in Mandatory Palestine was descended from 19th and 20th century immigrants. These are based on a variety of theories: the Egyptian military presence in Gaza, immigration from Egypt during the Egyptian-Ottoman wars or from migrant workers fleeing Egypt, the prevalence of Egyptian surnames in the general population (between Gaza and Jaffa), illegal immigration during the mandatory period, or statistical analyses of population growth (e.g., as this paper apparently describes). However, none of this evidence (as of 2023) held up ... the absolutely highest credible estimates of the foreign-born share of Mandatory Palestinian Arabs is 12%. Genetic studies further back up this point ... basically yes, there has been immigration into Palestine by Arabs but no, it's not credible to believe that the majority of Palestinian Arabs in the early 20th century were descended from anyone but 19th century Palestinian Arabs, and in turn 18th century Palestinian Arabs, and so on. Yes, the British divided the levant area between itself and the French. Four-five states were ultimately formed: Syria, Lebanon, Israel, and Jordan. Initially, the Arabs wanted all these to be part of “greater Syria” but the French and British together with some local leaders had different views. The Christians in Lebanon wanted an independent state, so France carved out Lebanon, which became separate and ultimately independent. The Jews wanted a Jewish state, and got Israel. At first, Jordan and Palestine were part of the same British mandate. However the British allies, the Hashemite clan from modern day Saudi Arabia, felt they weren’t being given enough land. The Hashemites originally controlled Syria and wanted Jordan too, but the French expelled them from Syria’s territory. As compensation, the British separated the east bank from the west side of the Jordan river, and established the kingdom of Transjordan, a totally artificial country that never existed before. At the time- it was essentially empty. It was mostly desert and there were a number of Bedouin settlements scattered. After the Israeli war of independence in 1948, Jordan’s population tripled after it annexed many Palestinian cities and with the influx of Palestinian refugees.
