1 month ago - Three promises got tested in these chapters, and every single one held. God told Jeremiah he’d be preserved, and he was, pulled out of mud by a stranger’s rags and kept alive through a burning city.

So they took Jeremiah and dropped him into the cistern of Malchiah, the king's son, which was in the courtyard of the guard. They lowered Jeremiah with ropes into the cistern, which had no water but only mud, and Jeremiah sank down into the mud.

January 21, 2026 - He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand” (Psalm 40:1–2). The “mud and mire” of David’s “slimy pit” probably refer to the conditions at the bottom of a cistern. Some in Scripture have had to deal with literal mud and mire: Jeremiah was captured and thrown into a muddy cistern, and “he sank down into the mud” (Jeremiah 38:6).

October 6, 2021 - In the Mud It wasn’t enough for Jeremiah to be off the streets. The king’s officials wanted him dead. Because of how he discouraged the people, they convinced the king to have him put into a pit/cistern (בּוֹר, bor). Cisterns typically hold water, but “it had no water in it, only mud” (Jeremiah 38:6). This hints back to Joseph.
