What is “mud and mire” (Psalm 40:2)? | GotQuestions.org
January 21, 2026 - He lifted me out of the slimy pit, out of the mud and mire; he set my feet on a rock and gave me a firm place to stand” (Psalm 40:1–2). The “mud and mire” of David’s “slimy pit” probably refer to the conditions at the bottom of a cistern. Some in Scripture have had to deal with literal mud and mire: Jeremiah was captured and thrown into a muddy cistern, and “he sank down into the mud” (Jeremiah 38:6).

Because of how he discouraged the people, they convinced the king to have him put into a pit/cistern (בּוֹר, bor). Cisterns typically hold water, but “it had no water in it, only mud” (Jeremiah 38:6). This hints back to Joseph.
