TIL that ostriches aren’t normally aggressive toward humans but can be lethal if threatened.
They are very possessive, though, and will become attached to people and become aggressive if they do not think their feelings are being reciprocated. I have a friend who is a vet and when they were in vet school, had to work with an ostrich. This one took a liking to them, so much so, that it would chase any other people away who tried to come near, and would try to mate with friend, including basically assaulting them. They are scary birds. More on reddit.com

Was googling to see if ostriches were an endangered species

They are of “least concern,” not at risk or endangered but the population is decreasing

Why is Ostrich in D tier?
The ostrich is placed in D-tier because of its incredibly poor matchup against Carnivoran builds. Despite its size, power, and high run speed, most Carnivoran players can easily take down a high-level Ostrich, including high tiers like Lions and African Wild Dogs, mid-tiers like Hyenas and Leopards, and low tiers like Cheetahs. While the ostrich can usually outrun them, against cheetahs they have virtually no options. Additionally, Nile crocodiles can grief them at the Watering Hole map feature. Jackals, raptors, warthogs, vultures, and mongooses (mongeese?) often raid their spawnpoints, so less than 10% of nests actually spawn players. And of those new players, only 15% make it to level 1. It is important to note that egg thieves were the leading cause of the extinction of Moas and Elephant Birds (besides humans, obviously). I put this on the TierZoo wiki page too. P.S. Ostriches are currently not endangered More on reddit.com

November 15, 2025 - Both Espersen and her partner became infected by bird flu but insisted they didn’t notice any symptoms. Meanwhile, the family had brought their case to court and won a stay of execution until they finished their appeal. The farm called on the CFIA to revisit them and test the other animals. This sounded reasonable, but the agency insisted it wasn’t coming back given the threats on the phone and by email from the ostrich defenders and the supposed dangers posed by the birds themselves (they can weigh up to 300lb and run at speeds of more than 40mph).

This common myth comes from a misunderstanding of a behavior that helps ostriches avoid predators! When an ostrich feels threatened and cannot escape, it will lie flat on the ground and stay very still, with its neck resting on the surface. This position makes it harder for predators to see it.
