It is impossible to be certain which, if any, of the works in the Hippocratic corpus were written by Hippocrates himself (c.430 BC). His fame was such that many Greek medical writings became attributed to him. What they have in common is not dogma but, rather, constructive debate between one another. They also share a concern with meticulous observation and an insistence on physical, not supernatural, causation of illness. The writers were the pioneers of rational medicine; their ideas, dominant for centuries, still reveal to us the ideal of ethical practice, as well as the origins not just of Western medicine but of scientific method.

December 3, 2020 - From the Preface: The bulk of the Hippocratic Corpus is such that only a small proportion of the extant treatises can be included in a book such as this.

The "Works of Hippocrates" refer to a collection of medical writings attributed to Hippocrates and his followers, who were pivotal in the transition of medicine from mystical practices to a more empirical and systematic approach in ancient Greece.

This treatise is an Arabic translation of a Greek compilation concerned with prognosis and the signs of death based on skin disorders. Twenty-five examples (qadiyahs) of skin conditions indicating impending death are given. Written in the 4th or 5th century A.D. in Alexandria and spuriously attributed to Hippocrates, it was said to have been found in his tomb.

In particular, he is credited with greatly advancing the systematic study of clinical medicine, summing up the medical knowledge of previous schools, and prescribing practices for physicians through the Hippocratic Oath and other works.
