The notion of a sacred spring or fountain in the Greek world goes back to pre-Christian Greek religion. There were three famous hagiasmata in Constantinople: that at Zoodokhos Pege, at Blakhernae, and at Hodegon. As to the iconography of the “Life-giving Spring” type, as already mentioned, the essentials are the Mother and Child in the basin of a fountain, and often two angels, as well as people around the fountain.
