The New Oil-Related Issues in the Sahara | Cairn.info
July 3, 2014 - 4This paper will not deal with all the countries in the Sahara region; we shall confine ourselves to studying four Saharan countries: Mauritania, Mali, Niger, and Chad. Only Mauritania and Chad produce oil, but we shall not linger over the consequences of already existing projects, but will rather describe future projects or those under development. We shall pose the question as to what the effect was of the high crude prices on this region which had previously attracted little interest from the oil companies.

Field expansions and enhanced oil recovery techniques have kept the country’s oldest fields at a steady rate of production; however, without additional upstream investment, decline rates are likely to grow, resulting in lower production. The country’s largest refinery, Skikda, is located along Algeria’s northern coastline, and it is the largest refinery in Africa. Skikda processes the Saharan blend, which derives from the Hassi Messaoud oil fields.

Oil in the Sahara: mapping anthropogenic threats to Saharan biodiversity from space - PMC
Across the African continent, the designation of oil concessions within PAs is common, and particularly within those with a high level of protection [34]. Threats from oil exploration activities at PA boundaries could also result in reduced connectivity of habitats between these PAs and important resource areas by reducing the quality of habitat corridors and producing physical barriers to movement, cutting off wildlife populations from wider ecosystems and satellite populations [35–38]. Such impacts on wide ranging animal species could have potential knock-on cascading effects through other
