1 day ago - Adherents hold that progressivism has universal application and endeavor to spread this idea to human societies everywhere. Progressivism arose during the Age of Enlightenment out of the belief that civility in Europe was improving due to the application of new empirical knowledge.

January 9, 2022 - While in the post-war period the US led the world’s democracies, during the last generation a European model has emerged from common values that provides a progressive alternative to the American way of life. Without distortions of gerrymandering and corporate financing, elections are more democratic on the continent, since coalitions inhibit polarisation.

May 21, 2024 - Populism and progressivism are similar in that both of them claim to be acting for the good of everyone, and in particular “ordinary people.” Both political movements promise to enrich the lives of ordinary people and promise to legislate towards that aim. But even this singular similarity is misleading, because progressives and populists define “ordinary people”—or even “everyone”—differently. As mentioned before, European populist authoritarians define “the people” as white people, and more specifically white Christians.

December 4, 2025 - Today it’s clear their confidence was mistaken. Far-right parties have kept piling on votes, established themselves in European institutions, reversed key tenets of the green transition and forced tougher border policies. They rule in Hungary and Italy and will soon in the Czech Republic; even in historically social-democratic Finland and Sweden, conservative leaders rely on their support.

Even though progressives across the European continent face a brutal portfolio of challenges, there is still room for manoeuvre using the many tools available to the state and to fulfil the promises made to voters in such slogans.

Kenneth O. Morgan, reviewing the nature of the links between British and American reformers, thought it meaningful to write in terms of ‘ Anglo-American Progressivism’. Other historians, looking at the matter in a more general, European context, were struck by the apparent similarities between American progressives, British Liberals or Labourites, and French and German socialists.

December 3, 2018 - The traditional way and hence the way in which political parties are organised is no longer responding to the new challenges of activism, participation and need for a different kind of relationship when it comes to representation. It is evident, when one reads the studies such as FEPS Millennial Dialogue. Following the ideas of the 1990s, Progressive parties transformed into professionally-managed campaigning clubs.

July 19, 2023 - If Europe was such an exemplar of progressive virtue, we would expect to see a powerhouse left-wing establishment. We would expect to see socialist or socially democratic parties dictating the pace of European politics. But that’s not what we see. Sweden’s Social Democrats, who were indeed once a dominant force, won less than 33 percent of the votes in 2022 compared to their 1968 high-water mark that pushed them over 50 percent — quite a feat in a crowded parliamentary system.

January 22, 2025 - The Group was renamed on 16 January 1973 as the "Group of European Progressive Democrats" when the Gaullists were joined by the Irish Fianna Fáil until 24 July 1984 when they became the "Group of the European Democratic Alliance". The group was never a close alliance. In 1973, the only common platform was on the issues of regionalism, social policy and the Common Agricultural Policy.
