The new populists cast themselves as decidedly anti-globalist and spoke to those who felt left out and left behind by free trade, by rapid and radical change in technology, and by what they characterized as doctrinaire progressivism in social policy. Long before Trump became president, voter ties to mainstream parties were loosening, trust in elites was eroding. It had been the same in much of Europe. In 2017, British journalist and editor David Goodhart proposed a framework for understanding the new populist phenomenon. Goodhart saw an emerging split between two groups.
