June 9, 2025 - Though he does not have the power to radically change Poland’s current policies toward Ukraine, his voice joins a chorus of unhelpful rhetoric that dampens support for Kyiv and cracks Europe’s united front against Russia at a critical time. ... 2025 Polish presidential elections 2nd round
Conservative candidate Karol Nawrocki has won the second round of Poland’s 2025 presidential election with 50.89% of the vote, narrowly defeating Rafał Trzaskowski, the liberal mayor of Warsaw, who secured 49.11%. The race was one of the closest in Poland’s recent political history, reflecting a deeply divided electorate. Karol Nawrocki is a historian and former director of Poland’s Institute of National Remembrance. Backed by the right-wing Law and Justice party (PiS), Nawrocki campaigned on a platform of traditional values, national sovereignty, and a firm stance on historical memory. His supporters often come from smaller towns and rural areas, particularly in the east and southeast of Poland. Rafał Trzaskowski, affiliated with the centrist Civic Platform party, represents a more liberal and pro-European outlook. As mayor of Warsaw, he has been a prominent voice for civil liberties, environmental protection and closer ties with the European Union. His base of support is concentrated in large cities and in western and northern regions, as seen on the electoral map. This presidential election was significant not only because of its tight margin but also due to its implications for Poland’s future direction. While the Polish presidency is largely a ceremonial role, the president holds veto power and can influence legislation and international policy. With a nearly even split in the popular vote, the result reflects the stark political and cultural divisions between Poland’s urban and rural populations, and between more liberal and conservative worldviews.
