From Reward to Anhedonia-Dopamine Function in the Global Mental Health Context - PMC
The transition from healthy ... responding to stress. Chronic stress, in return, affects the dopamine levels and dopaminergic neuronal activity, ultimately generating a “dopamine low” or anti-reward brain state linked to anhedonia and depression....

Neurobiological mechanisms of anhedonia - PMC
This distinction might be important for anhedonia in major depressive disorder, as both processes could be involved, either decreased feelings of rewards (duc a to reduced dopamine firing in the shell) or abnormal capacity to distinguish the incentive value of a conditioned appetitive stimulus (due to reduced dopamine firing in the medial prefrontal cortex and the core of the nucleus accumbens). The essential role of dopamine in the brain reward system does not mean that it has an independent role, nor does it imply that dopamine is the final common pathway to getting the reward effect.

Dopamine System Dysregulation in Major Depressive Disorders - PMC
Anhedonia is considered a core feature of major depressive disorder, and the dopamine system plays a pivotal role in the hedonic deficits described in this disorder. Dopaminergic activity is complex and under the regulation of multiple brain ...

Anhedonia: What It Is, Causes, Symptoms & Treatment
October 8, 2025 - For example, your provider may suggest you exercise regularly, like taking a walk or doing yoga. When you engage in physical activities, your body releases dopamine. Since anhedonia affects your body’s dopamine levels, exercising can help your body release more dopamine to activate your brain’s “pleasure center.”

I would argue that is because things are in reality way more complex than "low level equals symptoms". Biology is messy, lots of systems are interrelated, there's different target sites inside and outside the brain, different brain circuits that sometimes agonize and sometimes antagonize, different receptor types. Different ways in which neurotransmitters cause or facilitate or hinder reactions.

I’d read into the science of dopamine. It’s mostly bullshit.

Anhedonia - an overview | ScienceDirect Topics
Recent evidence suggests that anhedonia may result from abnormal functioning of the neurobiological system that mediates pleasure and motivation. More specifically, it has been suggested that anhedonia may be associated with reduced dopaminergic activity in the mesocorticolimbic dopamine system, a ...
