r/AcademicQuran on Reddit: Questions on the Amalekites in Islamic tradition
April 18, 2024 -

So I've recently fallen down a rabbit hole studying various Islamic traditions concerning the amalekites. Does anyone know of any books or articles that discuss the development of the Islamic traditions surrounding the amalekites?

Also does anyone know of Islamic traditions which equate the Amalekites with the Hyksos? I do think I have come across a few traditions which mentioned the amalekites as ruling Egypt or even saying that Pharaoh and Haman themselves were amalekites.

March 20, 2026 - Nachmanides (the Ramban) interpreted the Amalekite conflict as fundamentally a war against God Himself, since the Amalekites “did not fear God” and attacked the people of His covenant without provocation. (ICEJ) This was self-defense. Not an offensive approach. Surah 9:29, by contrast, commands offensive warfare against Jews and Christians who have not attacked Muslims at all. All they do is simply exist and maintain their own religions, yet the command is to attack them. Classical Islamic jurisprudence built the entire doctrine of offensive jihad on exactly this foundation: to expand Islamic rule over populations who pose no military threat.

An Islamic Perspective on Amalekites - Islamic Guru
April 1, 2026 - The Amalekites are described as a nomadic tribe living in desert regions, moving across harsh landscapes and frequently engaging in battles with other groups. Because of their repeated confrontations, they came to symbolize resistance and struggle in many biblical narratives. The meaning of Amalek in Hebrew is often linked to themes of opposition, which has led to broader interpretations of their role in scripture. However, Islamic teachings approach such historical narratives with a different perspective, focusing less on labeling specific groups and more on the moral and spiritual lessons behind historical events.

September 18, 2017 - I can’t prove this genetically, but this is the behavior of Amalek.”3 When I asked Benzi Lieberman, the chairman of the council of settlements—the umbrella group of all settlements in the West Bank and Gaza—if he thought the Amalekites existed today, he said, “The Palestinians are Amalek!” Lieberman went on, “We will destroy them. We won’t kill them all. But we will destroy their ability to think as a nation. We will destroy Palestinian nationalism.” ... I cite these instances because one of the central functions of religious communities—Judaism, Christianity, and Islam included—is bringing the insights of their historical sacred texts into the contemporary moment.

r/MuslimLounge on Reddit: Why do Muslims say killing of Amalekites is wrong in the Bible when there is something similar in the Quran?
February 1, 2025 -

I see lots of videos in street dawah where Muslims bring this up to discredit the ethics of the Bible, however, something similar is in the Quran.

In Surah Kahf (18:74), Khidr is ordered by Allah to kill an innocent child. Musa (as) is upset by this obviously and is reminded that he should have been patient.

Then, in 18:80-81, Allah talks about the reason behind ordering the child to be killed and he would have overburdened his parents with transgression and disbelief.

MAIN POINT: If we as Muslims are okay with Allah ordering an innocent child to be killed because of what he may do in the future, then we should not have a problem with the Bible when God ordered the death of the Amalekites. Jews and Christians would say that God had a reason for ordering the death of the Amalekites just like he ordered Khidr to kill that innocent child

SIDE COMMENT: I’m not saying that what is in the Quran is immoral at all because if Allah ordered it, then it must be a good reason (and there was). All I’m saying is that we as Muslims should not have a double standard and call out something like this in the Bible when we have something similar in the Quran

The Amalekites, that the Bible describes were a clan of the Qataban Arabs who settled in Edom, which is why Amaleq is designated as Esau’s grandson from his concubine, Timna. Revisiting God’s Command to Kill the Amalekites
The Quran recounts the story of the people of Israel asking the prophet Samuel for a king, Saul’s appointment as a king, Saul’s wars, and David killing Goliath (cf. 1 Samuel 8-17). What is interesting about all this is that even though the Quranic narration presupposes the biblical account of God’s commission to wipe out the Amalekites it nowhere condemns this Divine decree.
