r/LucidDreaming on Reddit: Is Anyone Familiar With Toltec Dreaming Of The Shamans?
August 20, 2018 -

I'm wondering if any of you read Carlos Castaneda's works. Dreams are gateways to reach higher realms that actually have a collective existence we all can experience. Anyways, I've been getting lucid recently now with the help of meditation and recall observation practices I do throughout the day. Here's some interesting text from one of the works of Carlos on his adventures on meeting one shaman named Don Juan:

For us to perceive those other realms, not only do we have to covet them but we need to have sufficient energy to seize them. Their existence is constant and independent of our awareness, but their inaccessibility is entirely a consequence of our energetic conditioning. In other words, simply and solely because of that conditioning, we are compelled to assume that the world of daily life is the one and only possible world.

Believing that our energetic conditioning is correctable, sorcerers of ancient times developed a set of practices designed to recondition our energetic capabilities to perceive. They called this set of practices the art of dreaming. It's the gateway to infinity.

dreaming we can perceive other worlds, which we can certainly describe, but we can't describe what makes us perceive them. Yet we can feel how dreaming opens up those other realms. Dreaming seems to be a sensation--a process in our bodies, an awareness in our minds.

Dreaming instruction is divided into two parts. One is about dreaming procedures, the other about the purely abstract explanations of these procedures: an interplay between enticing one's intellectual curiosity with the abstract principles of dreaming and guiding one to seek an outlet in its practices.

The human psyche is infinitely more complex than our mundane or academic reasoning has led us to believe. - The art of dreaming

The plant is categorized as a “deliriant,” for the intense hallucinations it brings about. For centuries, Mexican shamans have smoked cigars rolled with its leaves or ate its seeds to gain insight during divination rituals. In Northwestern Mexico, the Tarahumara still prepare a ceremonial drink of sprouted corn and toloache to encourage visions.

July 19, 2022 -

I'm just starting my journey and have a question. When anyone has "visions", beit while on a journey or just in general, are you actually visualizing them or just kind of believe that it's happening? When I begin a journey bi don't really"see" anything as I would with sight. I'm just wondering if I should be actually seeing things out if I and doing it right or what.

Perhaps this might be insightful. This is culturally specific, from a Manchu-Tungus speaking people of south eastern Siberia, so it shouldn’t be taken as a this-is-what-it-is-like-for-all-shamans-thing. “In the most accurate terms, the organic process of a shamanic journey can be described as a self-induced hypnagogic state in which the shaman remains fully aware as they enter into a psychological/physiological state commonly known as threshold consciousness. This transition is accompanied by a wide variety of sensory experiences such as tactile sensations, sounds, geometric patterns, and figurative images of spirits that occupy Heaven and Earth. There are also the picturesque landscapes of the alternative universes that are explained by the shamans as layers betwixt and between the three worlds. Most of the hypnagogic images contain an auditory component. “These experiences, within the context of the healing event, can last for minutes or change within the blink of an eye, propelling the shaman onto a new visionary landscape. Physiological sensations of flying, floating, fighting, walking, running, climbing, or resting accompanies the hypnagogic state, as do powerful emotional responses to fear or euphoria. Rather than classifying the classical shamanic experience as a schizophrenic episode or disorder, an alternative assessment of the evidence could suggest a self-controlled loosening of ego boundaries, resulting in visions, premonitions, and discourse with the inhabitants of the invisible worlds.” (Spirits from the Edge of the World: Classical Shamanism in Ulchi Society 321-322)
