r/telescopes on Reddit: East heavy balance clarification
December 17, 2018 -

When making your scope slightly east heavy, do they refer to whichever portion of the mount is currently on the east side of the meridian? As in it could be the OTA or the counter weight? Or does it specifically mean whatever side of the meridian you are imaging on?

I have no idea why i'm having issues getting this concept. I've been basing the way i've been doing it off this Uncle Rods blogpost which states "If you are imaging on the west side of the Meridian, balance the scope and then move the counterweight up the shaft about ½ - ¾ inch or so. So the mount is just slightly telescope heavy. If you are imaging an object east of the Meridian, balance and move the counterweight down the declination shaft by that ½ - ¾-inch. The mount is now just slightly counterweight heavy."

east heavy balance. - Mounts - Cloudy Nights
September 6, 2022 - OK, very rookie question. Many time I have read to unbalance the mount so it is east heavy. I understood what that means I just do not know how to do it properly. If I am pointing at the north star and I unlock the clutches should the whole telescope move to the east or should just the top rotate...

Balancing mount - East heavy etc... clarification needed - DSLR, Mirrorless & General-Purpose Digital Camera DSO Imaging - Cloudy Nights
August 8, 2018 - I have read several threads about how to properly balance my Star Adventurer mount and I'm still not totally clear about what to do, maybe it's because I'm more of a visual learner than a text based one. So I created a couple of diagrams as visual aids to help clarify things, hopefully. 1. Could ...

November 2, 2018 - Essentially, you want it to prefer to move just slightly to the east. Now, as to why: it's not wear and tear on the gears. It's backlash and gear meshing. When tracking, the drive gear will be rotating to move the mount from east to west.

May 26, 2016 - Hi I've an eq6 with 3 x 5kg counterweights up against each other. Let's say I have balanced in RA and the counterweights are east. "East Heavy" - Mounts - Cloudy Nights
September 12, 2019 - This causes the weight to be actually causing the rotation around the polar axis and the worm gear is “stopping” it from moving. When perfectly balanced the RA gear can slightly bounce between the slop. When east heavy the weight keeps the RA gear on the trailing edge of the worm and the motor is doing the driving of the movement of the mount.

East Heavy balancing question - myastroimages.com
September 30, 2015 - My east heavy balancing is just enough to start to pull the mount east but in this configuration, I find that the auto-guider has a harder time keeping the corrections small to stay locked on the guide star. RA corrections on PHD are in in the mid to high 0.20's.

string method of east heavy balancing? - Mounts - Cloudy Nights
October 10, 2023 - Actually the idea is that the weight loops over the mount and hangs on the East side, pulling RA in that direction, and even after the mount performs a meridian flip, the weight is still be on the East side and so is still pulling RA in the right direction. This solves one of the issues with mounts that need to be balanced East heavy: after a meridian flip you need to go and manually re-balance your mount, which is a pain if you are trying to be automated and are maybe sleeping .
