Balancing mount - East heavy etc... clarification needed - DSLR, Mirrorless & General-Purpose Digital Camera DSO Imaging - Cloudy Nights
August 8, 2018 - The idea of East-heavy is that whatever is on the east side of the mount is heavier than the whatever is on the west side of the mount. In your first drawing (on the left), the tube is to the east. It should be heavier than the counterweights. In your second, the counterweights are to the east.

r/telescopes on Reddit: East heavy balance clarification

East heavy means which ever part is on the east side of the axis is heavy. I have a mark on the weight shaft that positions the top weight. When shaft is on east side (OTA is on west looking at something on east side) I have a 2 finger width gap to the second weight. When shaft is west, second weight is slid up next to 1st.

As long as equipment doesn't change, no need to check balance again. Makes setup a little quicker.

It is, mostly, about OTA balance. I like to take the payload (the whole kit and caboodle) before mounting it, and place it on ...

March 5, 2025 - If the telescope is swinging away from you, it is east heavy. Move the counterweight up the shaft until the swinging stops. If the telescope swings towards you, it is west heavy. Move the counterweight up towards you until the swinging stops. When it does, you are balanced in right ascension.

Telescope Balance - Issuu
The direction that the mount is moving never actually reverses so there is no issue with backlash in right ascension. The goal to be achieved then is to have the worm and gear always engaged. The best way to do this is to have the mount balanced east heavy in right ascension.

If it swings either way, it needs to be rebalanced. Carefully move the counterweight(s) towards the mount if it is heavy on the weight end, or away from the scope if it is heavy on the tube end. Repeat the balance check and adjust again as necessary until there is no or minimal swing.
