WMO Statement on Weather Modification
August 19, 2025 - Hygroscopic seeding adds particles to the cloud with the intent to modify the number and size of liquid drops while glaciogenic seeding targets the number and size of ice crystals. Although cloud seeding technologies for purposes like augmenting precipitation, reducing hail damage, and dispersing fog are still developing, recent research in wintertime glaciogenic orographic cloud seeding has shown significant progress, demonstrating an evidence-based causal relationship for this specific method.

January 24, 2026 - The chemtrail conspiracy theory supposes that jet contrails are chemically altered to modify the weather and other phenomena. Other theories attempt to implicate scientific infrastructure such as the High-frequency Active Auroral Research Program (HAARP). In the franchise of both The Bionic Woman and The Six Million Dollar Man. In 1976, the weather control machine by Dr. Franklin, played by John Houseman featured in the "Kill Oscar" trilogy. Frank Herbert's Dune series features weather control technology, mainly on two planets: Arrakis, where the technology is used by the Fremen to assure privacy from observation and hide their true population and their plans to terraform the planet from the Imperium; and, Chapterhouse, where the Bene Gesserit intend to turn the planet into a desert.

Weather Modification - Geoengineering Monitor
September 29, 2024 - Although weather modification schemes have caused significant impacts to communities such as inducing droughts or causing flooding, they usually don’t intend to alter the climate more broadly and, for that reason, they aren’t considered to be geoengineering. However, there is significant overlap between many geoengineering and weather modification methods, and weather modification technologies are also important precursors particularly to Solar Radiation Modification (SRM) schemes.

August 23, 1998 - In Russia, various other former Soviet republics, and South Africa, the major programs of weather modification were aimed at reducing the fall of damaging hail. Experimentation in this area was apparently successful. Procedures involved introducing ice nuclei into potential hail clouds by means of artillery or rockets.
