John J. Klejman - Wikidata
Besides Harry Sperling another of my favorite dealer-smugglers was John J. Klejman. He and his wife owned an elegant gallery on Madison Avenue and 76th Street opposite the swank Carlyle Hotel, devoted to antiquities, both Greek and Roman and Byzantine.

The World of Franyo, Part 15: Art Dealers - ArtProfiler

May 24, 2025 - Klejman came to this country in ... had a gallery. In his place of business he has more the air of a curator than a merchant, even a merchant on the astral plane of rare antiquities. As an art dealer he takes great pride in the objects he has placed in various museums, and as a man with a museum of his own, 8 feet by 2, he also takes satisfaction in his title of Benefactor of a larger one, the Metropolitan, a designation that he has held for just a year this month. ... John Jacob Klejman in Brazil, Rio de Janeiro, Immigration Cards, 1900... ... As is true of many African ceremonial objects that have come into the hands of Western collectors, the origins of this wakemia are obscure before it came to the J.J. Klejman Gallery in New York. The Klejmans specialized in African art, and their gifts, and those of their daughter, Susanne Klejman Bennet ’59, make up a large part of the Davis’s African collection.
