Evaluation of the antiviral effect of chlorine dioxide (ClO2) using a vertebrate model inoculated with avian coronavirus | bioRxiv
November 1, 2020 - The need for safe and effective antiviral treatments is pressing given the number of viral infections that are prevalent in animal and human populations, often causing devastating economic losses and mortality. Informal accounts of anecdotal use of chlorine dioxide (ClO2), a well-known disinfectant and antiseptic, in COVID-19 patients has raised concern about potential toxicity, but also raises the question that ClO2 might elicit antiviral effects, a possibility that has never been examined in vivo in any animal model.

The dangers of taking chlorine dioxide as an antiviral treatment
April 16, 2023 - Since total radioactivity was measured rather than identification of individual chemical entities, it was not clear from these reports whether the parent chlorine dioxide itself or the chlorite, chlorate, or chloride ion degradation products were absorbed. ... Chlorite is also rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract. Peak plasma levels of radiolabeled chlorine were reached 2 hours after administration of a single gavage dose of 10 - mg/L 36ClO2 (approximately 0.13 mg/kg) to Sprague-Dawley rats. Using 72-hour urinary 3 excretion data, it can be assumed that at least 35% of the initial dose was absorbed (Abdel-Rahman et al., 1984a).
