I’m a “double brother” — a regular Freemason as well as a member of O.T.O. I’ll try to clear up what I can. First, OTO doesn’t make Masons, however it absolutely used to be a Masonic appendant body way back when it was founded and for about 20 years. An “Academica Masonica”for esoteric higher degree study. Aleister Crowley was not the founder of OTO but it was its most famous member and leader. When he took over and rewrote the initiatic rituals to be in line with his Eastern-Hermetic-Qabalistic syncretic religion Thelema, it stopped being Masonic. Also, women were admitted. At that point, it was no longer anywhere near regular masonry, and no longer made masons. For brothers that encounter Thelemites or members of OTO you should understand that there is no clear and simple answer if that individual believes in a masonicly compatible GAOTU. It’s often said that Thelema offers freedom from religion for those that need that, and also religion for those that do. A cosmogeny of Thelema doesn’t really exist. While Nuit does represent the phenomenonal universe, not every Thelemite may see that goddess as a Creator. Also, many Thelemites are Thelemites plus something else; that something else may include more traditional religions, where it’s easier to answer the GAOTU question in a straightforward way. The eschatology of Thelema as well as the conception of death and the soul are likely more easily and straightforward compatible with the Masonic landmark of belief in the immortality of the soul. But you’d still need to ask them directly. Thelema is not an atheistic philosophy, but there may exist some atheist or non-deist Thelemites. Thelema does attract some “spooky” types, but … well, in my experience so does Masonry, albeit to a lesser degree. Thelema, however, gets the rap of being all weirdos while Masons get to either be weirdos to some, or a do-gooder social fraternity to others. I’d honestly hope that my Masonic brothers who’ve dealt with the craze-o’s from the public believing the wackiest shit about Masonry (here on Reddit or in their own lodges) would have an iota of empathy for OTO and Thelema. OTO is definitely more out there than Masonry, but the bulk of my Siblings there are earnest seekers just like my Masonic Brethren. In general, if encountering candidates that are Thelemites, they can be treated like other minority groups in Masonry like pagans, wiccans, viking-styled traditions, or anything else. If someone seems earnest and is a Thelemite, there’s a good chance they believe in a GAOTU and the immortality of the soul, if they got as far as walking into a Masonic Lodge at an open house or something like that.
