1 month ago - Homelessness has been a chronic and controversial problem for San Francisco since the early 1970s when many mentally ill patients were deinstitutionalized, due to changes which began during the 1960s with the enactment of Medicare and Medicaid. The homeless population is estimated to be 13,500 with 6,500 living on the streets.

Because of the gold rush, the population grew and the demographics changed. By 1860, San Francisco had more than · 50,000 people, and the population more than doubled in the following decade. From 1870 until the turn of the century, the rate of population growth became slower with each decade. Between 1900 and 1960 there was no consistent pattern.

July 7, 2020 - The populations of most cities in the historic ”core” of the Bay Area have not increased dramatically since 1960. It seems in many cases that the places with the most money grew in population the least. The growth rings are close together in San Francisco, along the Peninsula of San Mateo County, the western edges of Alameda and Contra Costa counties and southern Marin County.

November 13, 2025 - The overall population started falling and didn’t bottom out until the early 1980s, only recovering from the 1950 peak in 2000. But that recovery was driven almost entirely by a rapidly rising Asian population (thanks largely to 1960s immigration policy changes).

December 16, 2023 - The confluence of these two trends is seen most clearly in the rapid drop of the African American population. The population has declined by about a fifth in ten years, a drop unprecendented in American cities. I think most of these demographic trends in San Francisco are going to continue.
